Yeah, I think your last point is very true. I've got no experience of replicas but I would suggest their credibility or otherwise is down to the brands behind them, That's not necessarily a guarantee, but moreso than buying something unbranded. If you can remember the brand, that might help the OP.

Rather than buy from ebay check out reifenprofi.de . If your German isn't up to much use Chrome and let it translate for you. I got a great deal last winter on virtually brand new wheels and tyres that will have a much better resale value than non OE kit.

I used to import MiM, Technomagnesio and MB Italia (Meccanica Brembana) wheels into the UK.

I used to supply Rover, Lotus and Arial with MiM and Technomagnesio as OE. Technomagesio used to make OE wheels for VAG and PSM, direct.

Some plants aren't as technical advanced as others, but any big name brand after market company will have a good technical department and they will be as good as any OE wheels. If you've never heard of them, they are very cheap and they don't have TUV or similar, then avoid them. It's unlikely that they will crack, but bending is an issue with the very low budget wheels.
A6 Bi Turbo (320PS) Black Edition, Techno pack, Matrix lights, heavy right shoe. Sept 2015.
