I have a 2004 Bora, tdi pd, ASZ 130hp/96kw, estate.
Pretty sure the lift pump is knackered, as I've read all the threads, put 12v from the battery onto it and no sound.
History - after a 100m very steep uphill ramp and short stop, the engine started, then after 200m petered out and stopped. A lot of cranking got it started again.
Since then occasional long cranks to get it to start, but usually starts first time.
Yesterday, after a warm start, 3 min later engine ran out of power/petered out. Fortunately this coincided with the top of a hill so I got a free bumpstart going down, was fine for approx 1 mile, then just approaching home, engine lost power, fluttered then stopped.
From first issue to last approx 6 weeks.
Won't start now. Usually I can hear the pump on the turn of the ignition, now I can't. I replaced the fuel filter after the first issue, approx 500 miles back.

Anyway, the part number on the pump is 1J0 919 050 B.
I've found this pump from the autofactors here, but the MAPCO one is saying it is not suitable for my car! The next suitable one is the METZGER (2250022) one at twice the price, approx £180.
The Mapco one (22876) is suitable for a long list of cars, however mine isn't listed. The less and more powerful Bora's are, as well as the same power mk4 golf with same engine code/power, and the A3 with the same engine/power.

Are they really going to be different pumps even though they are all supposed to be replacements for the one VW part number 1J0 919 050?
The list of pumps is here Autoersatzteile 1J0919050

Any ideas? Take a punt on the Mapco one or cough up the readies?

I think the Mapco application is just a little wrong, it is suitable for 100, 115 and 150PS Bora's and 130PS Golf's so there can't be an issue with the Bora and the ASZ engine. My system list a huge range of companies that make this unit and ones we commonly can obtain in the UK are Delphi, Meat and Doria, Meyle, Pierburg (the original manufacturer), QH, Valeo and Vemo.

Thanks Crasher, my thoughts as well.
Question though, is twice the price twice the pump? The once you listed are all more expensive, though the Mapco one was originally 3 times the price, maybe it's an end of line thing.

Personally I would push hard to get the Pierburg, I am a quality obsessive and have been let down time and again when I have experimented with cheap parts. I drive my local trade motors factors bonkers by insisting on specific brands.

Well I ordered the cheap one last night, I'll let you know how I get on with it, and I'll do a trawl of the internet on Mapco feedback. If it looks negative, I can do a return as long as it's unused.

The pump arrived. The Mapco box it was in said it was suitable for all bora, m4 golfs etc, did not break it down to particular engine codes etc.
The box said it was German manufactured, though I did not check for 'Made in China' on the pump.
Quality looked fine and as I could not find any negative info on the Mapco lift pump, so I fitted it.

Fitting: I used gaffer tape and plastic to protect the interior. First I plugged the new pump in to make sure it worked, healthy noise from it compared to the original.
When I disconnected the top tubes on the fitted pump, a bit of diesel came out, but hardly anything.
My tank was full, so I just carefully lifted the old one up and then tilted it progressively to remove the diesel and get it out. Tilt is required because of the float.
I actually spilled only a few drops, so that went well. Mostly it just ran down the side of the pump and into the tank. The top of the fuel tank is bowl shaped so could probably hold a good cup full of diesel if you were messy.
I had an old washing up bowl for the old pump, and on it's side plenty of diesel came out.
In went the new pump, connected it, turned the key a few times to prime the system, and bingo, started first time.
Unfortunately the fuel gauge did not work, a quick google check revealed that the contacts have some residue/coating on them, so, out with the pump once more, and pressed on the contacts while moving the float up and down, refitted it and problem solved.
This time when I removed the tubes, diesel 'poured' out of the black tube, enough to fill the top of the pump dish approx 25%.

I used it for a couple of days, then also fitted the new relay 109. I figure as it's new, and the old one is at least 11 years old, it's sensible to do.

In summary, easy to replace, Mapco pump quality seems fine, should have cleaned those contacts before putting in the new pump, glad I masked everything off due to the diesel drips.
