So at the moment, I'm on the side of the road with a dead golf.

A bit of back story: This started about 2 weeks ago, I drove my car to the supermarket, when getting back into it, put the key in the ignition, and it wouldn't start, it just cranked and cranked to no avail. I thought at first that maybe the batteries in the key were flat, thinking that it might have something to do with the immobiliser. So I walked to another shop to buy batteries. When I came back, I thought I would try it another time just incase. It started first pop as per usual. Strange I thought, but I didn't really worry about it.

That has happened on about 3 or 4 other occasions, all the same thing, wont't start, just cranks, wait a little bit then it works fine. (On one of those occasions the central locking from the remote stopped working, at which point I did replace the batteries, which made no difference. So I locked it with the key. Came back about 3 hours later and the remote worked fine.)

Now today: I was driving along at about 60kph, engine cuts out, oil light flashes and beeps. I let the clutch out, engine starts back up (well I got power steering back) but the rev counter didn't move). So I'm currently on the side of the road with a dead golf it seems. Believe it or not, I happen to have a vagcom on the seat next to me but for some reason it won't scan, keeps coming up "link error". I think something to do with the aftermarket radio and the K-wire, not sure. So annoying.

If anyone could offer some help I would be so grateful. It possibly looks like I might have to be towed home at this stage

This is a 1.8T AGU btw.

Bugger, yes it would have helped if I included some details about the car. 2000 1.8T engine code is AGU.

Just to update: After waiting for about an hour the car started again and I was able to make it home. But I still don't feel like I can rely on it which is annoying.

Hey Felix, so in the end it turned out to be the crank angle sensor, basically I made a list of all the things that cause this problem and seeing as it only did it when the engine was very hot I realised it must be that sensor as it's the only thing in my list that got hot.

Pretty easy thing to replace, took 10 minutes maybe and it only cost $60 (NZD)
