    Hi all,

I fairly recently purchased an 2008 Sport 170. Very happy with it thus far, however, noticed that recently idle has been a little on the rough side and i've experienced an issue with it taking a while to start. Perhaps more by coincidence, I also changed the EPB switch which resulted in the car being a right pain to start up. 'cured' by activating/deactivating/activating the EPB a few times and then bish bash bosh it starts as usual.

So, a mate of mine has VCDS and he kindly read the codes and what is seen is:

012295 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40): No Signal
    P3007 - 006 - Short to Plus - Intermittent
    Freeze Frame:
    Fault Status: 00100001
    Fault Priority: 0
    Fault Frequency: 1
    Reset Counter: 40
    Mileage: 175938 km
    Time Indication: 0
    Date: 2000.00.00
    Time: 15:55:33

So off to Euro Car Parts I went, picked up a sensor (£25) and allocated some time to swap it out. Errrr ... where is it? I cannay see it or its wiring. Is it a DIY job? I can't really find much information online.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Have you ruled out any blown fuses? Fuse boxes are left and right of dash (behind plastic trim) and also alongside battery in engine compartment. Check the relevant fuses first.

The G40 Hall (Camshaft Position) sensor is bolted to the side of the head under the inlet cam sprocket. To get to it you will need to remove the upper timing belt covers. The wire trails around the head to the front of the engine where it is connected into the front loom but space is very limited there with the alternator dominating the area and a bit of pipework. If it fails the failsafe is the engine speed sensor at the gearbox end of the crank and an emergency map is invoked by the ECU hence the hard starts.

PM Me and I will send you instructions of how to replace when I am home tonight.

    Hey,

thanks. I had gone straight to the sensor as the fault code doesn't appear straight away. But perhaps there's more to it?

Will drop you a PM and will do my best to remember to use the camera when i do it, handy to have somewhere to document it i think.

Handy to have documented so we can all see it, I think...

Get the real part from dealer spares. Give them your VIN they will sell you the most up to date version of part with one year warranty
Yes, a few quid more. But not some cheeepo Chinese fake which may or may not work

Sorry to drag up an old post but my Passat 140 sport 57 plate has now developed an issue where the car will start perfectly when cold but not when the engine gets to running temperature, it will only start again when it cools down. I have had it on a computer and it shows 2 fault codes, was wondering if this is what you had jtonthebike as the error codes relate to a camshaft sensor? If so, did replacing the sensors solve the issue? The codes are as follows...

12295 (P3007) Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Sporadic
833 (P0341) Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Range/Performance Sporadic

    Hi there,

Yes, same symptoms as what mine had - replacing the sensor (a pig of a job i understand, something like sensor £50 and labour £300...) cured the problems. Now, my only word of caution on this matter is to ensure that your timing is set accurately once the sensor has been replaced, a mechanic who carried out the work for me initially did the old 'yellow marker' on the cam gears & engine technique and whilst the car fired up and functioned afterwards, a subsequent check by a different and very competent garage (where my car is now looked after) found it to be out by approx 3.5 degrees.

I think the cambelt has to come off for it to be replaced and you may require rocker cover gasket too (can't be sure as not at home where the invoice is).

    Cheers & good luck!
