Noisy Steering

Hi There

My power steering has started becoming a bit noisy when turning. If i'm stationary and turn the wheel left and right I can hear a sort murmur/rubbing noise? Any ideas? When I driving it's less obviously but the engine noise drowns it so the noise does seem to be there all the time? I can also feel a slight vibration on the accelerator pedal when stationary when turning the wheel also?

Belt or tensioner issue. Have you check the fluid leve, colour and smell. Regards Peter

Could it be the slip ring in the steering wheel itself? Mine whines quite a bit. Its worse if I have had the heating on coming thru the vents. Spoke to an indy who said its a ten minute job to remove the wheel and grease the ring. Its more an irritant at the moment so wil get round to it soon..

Thanks for your responses.

The fluid was low so have put some more oil in and all ok. The problem is that it's leaking in the steering rack and my mechanic reckons I will need another one soon and the part is very expensive - 1k plus. :-( And apparently this is very common on Audis?

It's an 06 55 plate 2.0 TDI manual Avant.

got a quote from Audi for the part today and it was £963 pounds :-( However they did say that they have not known one to fail before? So i'm going to take into to them to find out for sure.

Sorry to hijack but that's exactly the issue I have! Sounds like a possible DIY job, could you advise?
