    Hi,

New to forum after taking possession of a MY12 Avant last week.

Loving the car a lot but I have an intermittent fault in the passenger side wing mirror.

The LED is extremely dim but still flashes just about, but I get a fault reported on the dash.

The dealer I've bought it from is sending me a new LED unit for the mirror.

I've seen a couple of YouTube videos about popping the glass out for older A6's and just wanted to know if anyone had any experience to confirm its for more or less the same for my car?

I've done repair and replacement work on my cars before, but Audi is all new to me.

    Loving the forum so far.

    Thanks

    Graham

Just changed my glass, just oiked it out using piece of flat plastic. If you use a screwdriver or similar remember to put some tape on first to protect the paint.

    Excellent, thanks.

Thought it might be the same. Once the part turns up I'll give it a go.

Yes, the glass is relatively simple to prise out, I did mine with a teaspoon.

The LED unit itself screws on fairly simply, the difficult bit is the black part of the casing underneath the mirror housing which clips in to the top part - the clips are pretty stiff and I broke a couple trying to take mine apart.

I'm a bit cack handed at that kind of thing so if you are half way competent you'll be fine.

Prised mine out with a plastic picnic knife, sad but true.

I've finally got the part and I can only get to one of screws and a couple of clips holding it in. The other screw and clips are behind the motor.

I've tried to take this out but unscrewing the two screws holding it to the housing and wiggling but there is zero movement.

Turns out getting the glass out was the easy bit.

Any helpful suggestions would be greatly welcome please.

I took the whole casing off (as it was smashed up by a passing lorry) - might be the only way to get to all the screws.

Hard to explain how to get the casing off, when you get all the clips and screws out there was a certain way of hitting it that made it come free - a friendly local dealer showed me the method.

I have a feeling I resorted to You Tube before I got that far.

Heh. Looks like it designed well enough not to come off.

    I'll have another play tomorrow.

YouTube isn't really helping to be honest. Plenty of help for C6 and earlier but not C7.

Well... I managed to do it

Not quite sure how, just sheer determination and grunt.

You do have to get the colour coded housing off, and this is done by the two screws at the top on either side, pushing the clips open (managed to snap one) and then just hitting the top outer edge with the open palm of your hand to force it upwards.
It feels like it might break but the clips holding it inside just give way eventually.

Unscrew the LED unit and attach the new one, and then push the housing back over making sure all the clips on the underside go in and the two clips are positioned correctly inside at the top where its screwed in before giving it that final push to lock it all together.

Not something I'd want do again.

    Success!

I agree, not something you want to do often - the incentive for me was avoiding the £500+ I was quoted for a new mirror.
