I am using a 95 golf cl auto that has had a 2.0 replacement engine fitted, i have it on test drive for a week to see if i want to buy it. The main problem is the gears change great up to third arround 2500 to 3000rvs but it seems to want to stay in 3rd forever, i blip the throtle but no change i have to push it to high end rpms to get it to change. there are 2 buttons on the pannel NORM and MAX these seem to do nothing to change it. By the way i live in cyprus and reasonabley priced cars are hard to come by This costs £1500 wich is good for here, am i buying trouble? any easy fixes? i hope so thanks for looking. Stoddy

    Hi Stoddy

We bought a 1.8 CL Golf auto in August, with almost the same problem. Turned out to be the main K3 clutch pack was shot.

DO NOT CONTINUE TO BLIP THE THROTTLE!

Local garage had it and just said "keep your foot down, it will change up eventually" this wore what was left of the abrasive material in clutch pack out and got it so hot it warped the end of the K3!

Cost just over 1000 pounds to fix at a local automatic gearbox specialist, took the gearbox out and rebuilt the whole thing. Also one of the solenoid valves had a worn barrel, had that swapped out for a further 200 notes and it shifts real good now.

Alot of money but drives very nice now.

If you've bought it get it looked at soon at a automatic specialist.

Reconditioned boxes with the fitting, 8 hours labour and oils were coming up at 1500+ pounds!

    Best Regards
    Neil
