    Problem solved - thanks guys

If it aint broke dont fix it, right!?

    Wrong!

    OK I'll set the scene:

Messing around today trying to read my ECU with a KWP2000 interface... removed fuses 11 and 15 from the fuse box (Instrument cluster)

Cut a long story short, couldnt read the ecu, put fuses back, cleared the faults with vag-com.

Find that climatronic wont power up, and "Oil Sensor Workshop" displays on the cluster.

I take it that the "Oil Sensor Workshop" message is something to do with service interval, the car was serviced 500 miles ago, should I just log in and reset it back?

Climatronic appears to be totally lifeless, no display at all, and no indicated air temperature on the instrument cluster.

    Any suggestions?

Yes, this will teach me to mess with something I "thought" I knew something about.

I would think that if you know the oils good, then reset it and see if it come on again. It won't hurt its and aid for the driver and as you have chaged the oil then you know were you stand.

oil sensor workshop refers to the oil level sensor in the sump. but god knows what you have done. try resetting it see what happens. i drove for a year with that on the display cos i wouldnt pay for a new sensor. 100 odd quid for a sensor but if u buy a new sump u get the sensor with it for 130. figure that out. a sump for 30, sorry im rabbleing here goodluck on the reset.

The sensor is not that much to replace, the part cost £56 from vw and about an hour to fit it, plus you will prob want to put new oil in as you have to drain it out, so that you can get the sump off, All the sensor does is tell you when the oil level is getting low and it makes the orange oil can light come on, with the message "check oil level".

ours started doing this the other night, however this might make sense as our mk4 is down about 100mm on coil overs and apparently the mrs went over a rock in the road during the day and it bounced under the engine and down the length of the car.

do you think the shock of a rock smacking off the sump would affect the sensor?

Put the diagnostics down and step away from the car! Did you get that sick feeling in your stomach? <chuckles>

The fuses you removed - why did you remove them? Have you checked they've not blown?

Heh... didn't really get that sinking feeling, because im 99.999% sure its something simple. I did have the sinking feeling yesterday when I thought id fried the ccm (turned out that the drivers door wasnt closed properly hence the central locking not locking) lol

    Fuses:

Yep, checked today.. Odd though because the climatronic and cruise control are on the same fuse!
I'll take another look now I think.

Turns out all is stemming from a completely different incident!

When I removed the fusebox cover I noticed a fuse that hadn't been fitted properly, when I grabbed it with the tool it came out, when I refitted it I plugged it into the socket below where it should've been!

In other words, Fuse #5 was missing!

    All problems sorted, everything

Made me realise how bu##ered i'd be if the climatronic failed, had to go into town earlier and was like a baked potato when I got back :-\

    That was my next idea!

Don't just inspect it, take it out and swap it for another one. Sometimes the break is so subtle you miss it.

    EDIT:

Hahaha, job done - glad you got it sorted!
