    Hi Guys,

I'm a bit confused and wondered if someone coud shift the fog

I've had my A4 since January and today when I started it up got the message "Service in 300 miles, 123 days"

Now I don't plan to take it to the dealership but to the mechanic who has looked after our families cars for years. I'm not cutting corners it's just I trust him and know know he does what he says.

I was a bit concerned about resetting the service computer but read the instructions in the handbook and felt fine. That was until I read the threads on the forum which said this is for fixed service and not long life service intervals which my car is on.

This is were I get confused. It doesn't mention this fact in the handbook (but then it doesn't mention a lot of stuff in the handbook!) so does this mean that unless my mechanic has a VAG computer or can get his hands on one I'm going to have to get the dealership to service and reset?

If I reset it myself using the instructions will this screw up the service interval information?

Sorry this is long I'm trying to understand this as I write. Hope someone knows what I'm gibbering on about

    Cheers,

    martin.

If your going to do 10K, 12 month servicing then you can set it by the book.

If your having variable servicing done the you need a vag com to reset the service indicator.

I take it your on a variable service schedule then ?

You can get your mate to service it and get a friendly VWAUDIFORUM member to reset the service interval for you.

Yep, I was told it was on the variable service schedule not long after I got it when I was in the local dealership getting a buld changed. Yes I know pathetic eh! But at the time I was yet to discover this great forum and the excellent bulb changing guide.

I'm going to ask the mechanic tomorrow if he has or can get his hands on the computer thingy to reset the interval. If not, I'll contact the dealership and see if they would be willing to reset it after he services it (at a price ofcourse). If they wont then it looks like I'll have to get them to carry out the work and reset it then.

I'm kinda new to the forum so don't know any members in the area who have the ability to reset it for me. It just seems a bit of a rip off when you can reset it yourself if on the fixed service schedule. Which I must admit I'm toying with the idea of getting it serviced yearly just to save the hassle.

Anyway, thanks for the info mate and taking the time to reply.

    Cheers,

    martin.

Personally speaking i'd go for an annual service, its good practice to have an oil & filter change annually as a minimum to keep the engine in as good a condition as possible. Its not an expensive job just to have this done and also helps spot anything that might cause concern at MOT time. Certainly going to be cheaper to have an annual quick service with a friendly local mechanic you know than take it to the dealer every 2 years!

£380 Jeez Wonder if I was being told a little white porky.

Spoke to my local mechanic and luckily he has a diagnostic tool that will reset the service interval. Though I think I am going to to get the car serviced yearly when the MOT is due. That way I know it will pass the test, be serviced properly and if necessary I can reset it myself.

May end up costing me but I don't think anywhere near £380. Even if it does it will still be like getting the MOT for free.

Hope you find a good reliable local garage Naeem786. When you do chances are they will be able to reset the interval for you at the same time. Ofcourse the really difficult part is finding one in the first place!
