I have a2005 audi a6 3.0tdi quattro ignition lock failure displaying in red on dashboard. I've searched many forums and have been told its the ignition switch. I called Audi today and quoted me £228.00 just for the part. Can I buy a second hand ignition switch do I also need to get the key if buying second hand? Please help

You've not said how the fault has manifested itself, for instance will the car not start?

Also you've not said if you have a manual or tiptronic or if you've had the car scanned with VCDS to show any codes.

Finally you've not said how long you've owned the car and how long the lock failure message has shown...or if you've done any work to the car that could cause the fault....even sommat as seemingly innocuous as changing your car or keyfob batteries

    Basically a 'gizza clue' situation

Sorry it's a automatic, the first thing that was happening was when turning the ignition off sometimes it never clicked so system not fully shutting down, I could not use key fob to lock doors. I would sometimes sit in car turning ignition on and off till I get the click from key area. The key has got stuck in ignition, so when turning car off could not pull key out. Now for about a month or so I have the red sign saying ignition lock failure.

I had the issue of the ignition lock not releasing the key a couple of years back, so had to use a paperclip in the hole found at about 7 o'clock on the ignition barrel.

Scanned and cleared the fault with VCDS and it's never returned

So it displays the words 'ignition lock failure' on your screen between the dials? If so some questions

    1) How many keys do you have for your car?
    2) If two does it display the same message on both?
    3) If both and problem on only one have you compared the two keys to check for wear/damage/crud?

Yes I have two keys and displays same message for both keys, I've cleaned the keys with a toothbrush removing any lint on then but message still appears. I cannot use the fob to lock car have to stick key in door lock and lock that way.

Bizzle, am up in East London (E11) at the end of the month if you can wait that long to have a scan done and clear codes?

    If so let me know.
