A unique problem for me - for the first time in 30 years motoring I went into a dealership last Wednesday and ordered a new car. Nothing too fancy, a Move Up! to replace the 11 year family Touran battlewagon, we're changing cars since moving house from the sticks to the town as most journeys are now a few miles round the doors and the Touran tdi was barely getting warmed through, and with me working away a lot I reckoned something new with warranty would give me a bit more peace of mind rather than getting the dreaded phone call from home about this warning light or rattle. I've still got the old Passat tdi to keep me entertained once I'm back home.

Anyway the problem, if it can be called that, is this; when we get the new car next week I'm going to clean and prep the topsides with some auto finesse products but I'm looking for some sort of underbody wax to protect the chassis components, mainly the shiny black bits like subframes, struts etc. Just wanting to try and keep it decent top and bottom as we will likely keep the car for several years if it behaves itself.
I've used waxoyl on the other cars and it's pretty awful stuff to be putting on a new car, I'm looking for a lighter spray on clear wax type stuff I can spray on, and have it last a few years between applications. Any one got any recommnedations???

Anyone used Dinitrol 3125 as underbody sealer?
I'm looking for sealer to give some protection to the black painted chassis components that always rust first on new cars, and don't want the clag of waxoyl or Schutz type stuff.

Waxoyl is very effective although a little messy to apply . A simple brush treatment over the parts that are likely to corrode will put off corrosion for many years. My experience of other treatments is that a lot of them evaporate over time. Waxoyl "self heals" to some extent. I coated all the parts likely to corrode on the underside of my golf when new. Coating Bolts, screws, clips etc. makes removal years later a simple task. The engine undertray screws & clips benefit from the waxoyl treatment. Likewise a coating of copper anti-seize paste on the wheel mounting surfaces and bolt threads enable wheels to be easily removed years after.

Thanks for reply, maybe waxoyl brushed on and a bit spray here and there, I've waxoyled several other cars, tractors, boat trailers etc, PITA to apply without getting it on too thick, as it seems to flake off in chunks after a few years if too thick.
No panic to do it immediately, just before winter really.

I use Bilt Hamber Dynax UC in my wheel arches and suspension where I don't want any fling or colour change. Seems to last pretty well but maybe not hard wearing enough for under body. They also do some other coatings as well. Easy to use as it is a spray on.

buy a cheap 20 quid garden sprayer from a dit shop, warm the waxoil can in a large saucepan for a while, until its really thin. pour into garden sprayer, pump it up and spray it on. you can get a nice thin coat into all the right places. do it on a neighbours drive to save wrecking your own, or use a tarp or re tarmac your drive afterwards.

Thanks for replies, I've sprayed warm waxoyl before, goes really runny and good idea to use a garden sprayer as well to get a more even thinner coating, to avoid gloop all over the place. Also had a look at the Dynax UB and S50, might prefer that in aerosols rather than the whole waxoyl carry on!
Few weeks to think it over as car will be another week to deliver and me working away.

I remember using the long "lance" tube with warm waxoyl on my VW camper under body . I inserted the lance into a chassis member and used the pressure can /pump (from waxoyl) and gradually pushed the lance further into the hollow chassis member. I suddenly felt something warm and wet on my leg. The flexible plastic lance had met some underbody obstruction and had "doubled" back in direction and had managed to go up a few inches under my overall legging ! The waxoyl came off with easily with terps but had to take an immediate shower to get rid of the smell. My wife thought this was very funny. Happy days ! ?
