I've read loads of posts all over the web regarding this. It appears there is a plug that can be put in the MDI socket in the cubbyhole in front of the gearstick on my 2013 Golf GT. i've just had the lead supplied fail and be replaced and I thought it would make more sense if there was a MDI - USB convertor plug so any Apple Lightning lead can be used with an iPhone 6. As with the latest Discovery Pro cars. My son has a 2015 GTI and just uses his Apple lead for his iPhone 6.

I've seen reference to a 5G0 035 222 D..... is that correct and is that all I need ? Do VW supply these or are they third party ?

    Any help appreciated please

Its such a obvious thing for VW to do.... USB being the standard in use by all phone makers. They have on the new Discovery Pro units. A retro plug to convert seems ... well obvious. I see lots of references to it and even pictures but some dispute whether it works for music or just charging/phone. The part number above seems the most consistent for all singing all dancing USB connection so hopefully someone can confirm

I think that part is just the USB socket and there is some wiring to be done ? Again if anyone knows. I suspect VW dealers will not really be interested, but you never know. Probably a third party car electricians would be more likely to do it especially if a VAS reset has to be done.

That appears to be the VW part number for the actual MDI interface/socket....

My dealer that I have a MY16 Golf estate on order with has confirmed that the MDI has been replaced with USB, which would indicate they (VW) have acknowledged that USB is better. Not sure if that will result in them making converters available though.....

We can only hope. Its not as though its any sort of technical challenge if you know the pin outs and had a soldering iron..... I wonder if VW have that sort of thing ?

I have a mark 6 with MDI. It came supplied with leads for both apple and USB. I tested the same lead in a mark 7 in the showroom a couple of years ago and it fitted ok and worked just fine. Is that what you're looking for?

Thanks and that would solve one problem so I will bear it in mind. What I would really want is a converter plug that changes MDI to USB without a lead... or even a reasonably priced conversion of the whole MDI socket to a USB one like on the new cars.
