Hi, the lid on the rear door ashtray won't stay closed, is there a fix, as there doesn't seem to be anything broken, if I need to replace it, how do I remove the entire ashtray. It's a 08 A6.
    Thanks Ian.

The ashtray part just pulls out, to remove the lid I'm guessing you'll need the door card off and detatch from behind.

I've just replaced my rear right ashtray. Open the lid, slide out the removable innard. Thats the easy part.

There are 2 lugs - left and right that need to be compressed to let the ashtray craddle come out of the opening. I did mine by using a small flat blade screwdriver into the left hand side (nearest the front of the car) and levering that into the ashtray. Then it was a case of jiggling and pulling until it came free. Probably a better way of doing it but i didnt need to take the door card off.

I bought a replacement from fleabay so i could see where the lugs were to start with. i wasnt concerned with breaking the old one to get it out so I wasnt being too careful but i still didnt break it. it's a bit frustrating as you cant really see what you're doing.

If i did it again i'd try to lever both lugs in and try and take it out squarely.

    Good luck, let us know.

Got the ash tray out with a feeler gauge pushed down outside of the tray which lifted it up and wedged it after prising out the tang with a small screwdriver ,then prised opposite tang out and it easily lifted out. Lid stayed closed nearly every time, but when I replaced it back in the door it wouldn't stay shut, rather annoying :-) time for a new one, EBay or somewhere else any suggestions?

    Thanks Ian.
