A8 D3 practically dead, any ideas.

Just wondered if you could help me I have an Audi A8 D3 2004 4.2 petrol that is refusing to start or turn on. My 2 keys won’t operate via remote, the alarm can’t be deactivated and the ignition won’t turn on. I can though turn the key to the ignition setting and this does give me the heater and suspension motor.

This all occur after an electrical short in the wiring, one of the twisted pair running across the back of the boot. This was repaired and the car ran for a few minutes and then the next time of turning on it was dead, I had just command of some of the electrics.

My VCDS (genuine ross-tech cable and software, full package) can talk to the can bus gateway, the engine ecu, control head, instruments, navigation, radio which it says are malfunctioning. The radio is Ok as is the TV tuner and sound system. The telematics has sporadic communication and everything else can’t be reached. I lost control of all the seats but the driver’s seat does now move sometimes and I can tilt the steering wheel but only in short bursts. I have a long list of codes and devices that can’t be communicated with but have no idea if this is due to a fault in one, or all of the modules or just because the ignition won’t turn on.

I’ve had the instrument cluster sent for testing and returned with no faults found, have also replaced the Can gateway managing to recoded the new one in and replaced the battery control module but can’t communicate with it to check it.

All of this came about after a simple wire break in one of the twisted pair wires to the can bus ECU.

I have tried every possible key recode/resyncing method I can fine for Audi and VW cars but to no avail and can’t access the immobiliser or start authorisation via VCDS to check any key listings.

Considering what can and can’t be accessed, could this be a simple case of the car losing all the coding’s for the keys or something more sinister? My own thoughts now are turning towards the start and authorisation unit which I believe entails a complete new steering column.

Yes, as Crasher says and maybe this would help, I don't think you have to replace the whole steering column, just the KESSY box....

Kessy Control Module Swapping

Prerequisites:
The NEW module is installed in the car.
ORIGINAL Electric Steering Lock is still installed.
If the ORIGINAL Electric Steering Lock has been replaced, perform Electric Steering Lock Adaptation first.
Battery voltage at least 12.0 V. We strongly recommend the use of a battery charger.
Make sure to have BOTH PIN's, from the OLD (ORIGINAL) and the NEW (USED) control module.

Put the first Key into the ignition Lock, but do NOT switch ON the ignition.
Press and Hold the Brake Pedal for 20 Seconds to wake up the Diagnostic Databus.

[Select]
[05 - Acc/Start Auth.]
[Meas. Blocks - 08]
Select Block 024.
[Go!]
Make sure the shown lock times in field 1, 2, 3 and 4 are 0 (each field represents a time in minutes).
If the lock times are NOT 0:
Do NOT switch off the ignition!
Allow the car to sit for AT LEAST the number of minutes that were indicated by the fields 1-4.

For the following procedure, use the PIN of the NEW (USED) control module.

Enter zero followed by the 4-digit PIN. For example, if your PIN is 1234, enter 01234.

Enter 050 in "Channel Number".

For the following procedure, use the PIN of the OLD (ORIGINAL) control module.

[Done, Go Back]
After a successful adaptation a lock time will automatically be set.
[Meas. Blocks - 08]
Select Block 024.
[Go!]
Make sure the shown lock time in field 4 is 0 (a field represents a time in minutes).
If the lock time is NOT 0:
Do NOT switch off the ignition!
Allow the car to sit for AT LEAST the number of minutes that were indicated by field 4.
[Done, Go Back]
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]

Switch OFF the ignition and let the car sit for ~1 minute, then switch ON the ignition again.
Verify that the NEW (USED) control module now shows the VIN/IMMO-ID of the vehicle now.

Proceed with Key Matching now.

Snapdragon: Many thanks for your reply. I have thought about replacing more units but my big problem is I can't get the old codes from the units as I can't access them and I'm not sure about putting in new units without a code to use. I have read the ross-tech page regards working out the codes based on the accessories fitted but got totally lost trying to figure it out.

I'm no expert, but I think there are multiple CANBUS networks 'routed' via the 19 - GATEWAY.
I think between 3 and 5 CANBUSES depending upon equipment fitted.

If we look at:

it looks like the CAN gateway can't communicate with powertrain or comfort CANBUS.

Thanks snapdragon for the info. Do I take it that where the vcds refers to the powertrain it's refering to the drive systems can and the comfort system being the convenience can. Or am I being to logical. If that's the case what possible ECUs could be causing the loss of signal.

Actually it's a very good question, knowing how susceptible these cars are to voltage drop. At first I ran off the main battery, then thinking the voltage might be to low I charged the battery for two days and tried again. Then I tried again with the charger still connected. The lowest voltage on any test was 11.7v, all the other tests had a voltage of 12.7v. It was working along this line that I decided to try another battery control module in the hope that I could communicate with the battery and fine out what was going on but that didn't work. Since then the battery has been on a constant trickle charge. I have considered changing the battery but not being able to communicate with the car to tell it there's a new battery at the moment it just seems an expensive shot in the dark.
