    Good afternoon everyone!

I've always had a sneaking admiration for the early S8 (D2?). I now have a bit of spare cash and am starting to look. So, firstly, should I buy an S8 rather than a regular V8 Quattro? What major problems should I be aware of with these cars?

I will only be using this car sparingly. My daily driver is a Ford Transit Custom, of all things.

    All opinions/thoughts welcomed!

    Regards,

    Rollo

Getting very collectable, would think they will keep going up in price if you get a good one. Suppose the main concern would be the age and the gearbox.

Rollo here again. I missed the 2002 facelift S8 I wanted. However, there are a couple of earlier S8's for sale at present. Aside from the big wheels, is there any compelling reason to hang on for a facelift model?

They are the best looking A8 but WHEN (not if) they go wrong such as the ZF box failing, then they can be absolute money pits. The electrics are extremely complex, to be honest you need to be either able to do the work yourself or have a very deep wallet when it comes to repair bills. Never judge the repair costs by the cars book value, it is THE perfect example of a car that cannot work like that.
