3.0 TDI Fuel Pump Failure - Any one any experience?

My 2008 A4 3.0 TDI has suffered a high pressure fuel pump failure.

Driving along at 50mph, the engine missed and then acted as if it was running out of fuel.

Coast to a stop and the AA eventually drag it back to my local dealer. After 10 hours of diagnostics they tell me the high pressure fuel pump is full of swarf. (bits of metal) In turn there is swarf in the fuel rails and injectors. So the entire HP fuel system needs replacing. Cost c£8.5k.

Car has 93k miles on it. Has a full dealer history, never missed a service, been looked after etc.

Has anyone any experience of this? Any recourse to Audi?

The dealer was inferring its beyond economical repair.

I'm thinking of having a go myself. Still researching special tools needed etc. Watch this space for a how to or maybe a not-how-to

before you do anything i would contact a chap known as diesel bob. funny name i know, but he is about the bes when it comes to anything derv. he would probably be able to rebuild the pump and injectors and give you some guidance. google him. i think there is a charge for info since he became so popular and loads of people were just calling for tech help, but it will be worth it.

Ouch, that's a pretty big problem. Are they saying the pump failed and munched it's internals through the fuel system? Or something else upstream failed and passed the metal through?
