I've got a 52-reg Passat TDI PD 130. I've been looking to make a spare key for it and I bought a pre-programmed key fob and blank key blade from eBay.

I've been ringing around a few locksmiths to get it cut and programmed, and today I was told by my local locksmiths that a fob programmed to another car cannot be re-programmed as it messes up the computer system. Is this true?

Sorry if this sounds thick, I am a newbie! Thanks in advance for any help.

for want of a better turn of phrase rollox...

i'm not sure what computer system he's referring to , but it won't mess anything up. there is such a thing as static and rolling codes from what i understand, in relation to transponders and sometimes these need replacing.

most locksmiths simply 'clone' the transponder, ie they take the original key, make a copy of the data contained and transfer that to the new key.

if you're local, i can have a go at coding it for you myself, just bring some strongbow

i can't guarentee it'll work, but if it doesnt.... you'll only lose your petrol and i can activate things like anti hijack and alarm blips if you haven't already got them activated

drop me a pm or email me on sales@eshrules-enterprises.co.uk

make sure you include your username if you email me mate

anti hijack is when you have gotten in your car, you have started your engine and as soon as you go over 10mph, the doors lock automatically. you can set them to auto unlock on key out of ignition or to unlock at your request.

alarm blip - this is a short audible 'blip' from the alarm siren when you arm the alarm. you can modify the alarm settings to flash indicators, flash indicators and blip or no flash and no blip, ie silent arming.

actually some of the newer keys will only allow the transponder to be programmed once. I think i read huweth had this issue and got anew transponder for the key and then he could match it in.

Thanks very much sir, and thanks for all the replies everyone.

I'm in Birmingham, slightly far away! I'm going to try and get the blade cut first and then I'll see what's what - my key is a slightly older one I believe and should be able to have the transponder reprogrammed.

If I'm in the area eshrules, I'll give you a bell.

If I wanted to 'change' my passat so I got the blip when the alarm was sqitched on, or the doors were locked at 10mph - what is the best/simplest way to do this?
