Last month I just had a major service done and was told the following:

    • A/C needs re gas
    • Brake fluid Change
    • Gearbox oil needs changing
    • New breather System
    • Rocker Cover Leaking

The car also had he engine management light on. Which were showing the following codes:

    1. 16500 - Engine Coolent Temp P0116
    2. 16805 - Bank 1 Efficiency below threshold P0421
    3. 17544 - Fuel trim: Bank 1 System too lean P1136
    4. 17546 - Fuel trim: Bank 2 System too lean P1138
    5. 16891 - Idle Control System RPM higher then Expected P0507

Symptoms before the car went in to the garage.

    • Before the car went in, it was drinking more petrol .
    • the heather was not heating up. (We suffered in the winter)
    • I felt the gearbox has a tiny little judder/shake but you had to concentrate hard to feel it. The gearbox didn't has a gearbox oil change for a while then i started to read about the horrors on the internet about the judder.
    • When you come out of reverse and put it into D the car really judders so bad (you could snap your neck of!!!) but it doesn't do this all the time. if you accelerate slowly then its ok.

On Friday I done the above work which cost me £644.86 OUCH!

Now I have the following issues.

    1. The car judders more then often
    2. When pulling off you have to press the accelerator harder as the car is slow.
    3. It doesn't pick up speed. ( I was on the M25 yesterday and tried to give it a good thrashing yet its not pulling enough)
    4. The Engine light has come back on.
    5. Air Con is not cold enough.
    6. The heather doesn't heat well enough.
    7. When i saw the engine light i scan for some codes with my little device and the following codes came up:
      • 16805 - Bank 1 Efficiency below threshold
      • 16891 - Idle Control System RPM Higher then expected
      • 17546 - Fuel Trim Bank 2 System too lean

I was told by changing the breather system these codes would go away.

I did not change the rocker covers yet as a bit short of money. But do you think this would help?

Can anyone help me or have any suggestions?

If it was mine I'd take it back to the garage and complain, as they should have done everything necessary on the service to eliminate most of those problems. And if you think that is a high bill, wait until you need a cambelt change as well!!

Find another more suitable garage. He does not understand much in this car and he will do more expensive damage.

How much do you think and would be a good price for a cambelt change inc water pump etc for this type of car?

If this is the first cambelt change (ie mileage around 80k), then you are talking about changing cambelt, pulley and tensioner, water pump and thermostat = dealer cost ~£600. If it is second change (ie mileage 140-160k), then most likely the aux belts, pulleys, tensioners and mounting bushes are also shot or soon will be - maybe also pulley of aircon unit = dealer cost of £1k+.

The above is my experience of doing the job myself at 140k on my 2002 Allroad. Including having to buy the tools, job cost me ~£500 plus my time. If you are keeping the car AND rely on it, I would strongly advise also replacing those aux parts!
