service indicator

hi i've just bought a 1998 passat tdi 1.9 se could anyone help me with what the services indicator should say when i start up car came with no handbook currently says insp flashing for about 30secs then goes out is that what its supposed to do also is there anywhere i can get a handbook maybe pdf format . thanks

It means you need a service

It'll either say INSP or OIL - the INSP is a major service, the OIL is an oil service.

Handbooks, as much as it hurts me to say, are available on eBay - be careful what you buy though.

thanks for replies one other question? how long are the service intervals i've have not had a vw before so not sure how long between each oil change? thanks

Oil change is recommended every 10k, but quite a lot of owners do this every 5k.

Service intervals are 10k unless you're on longlife servicing. I'd say you're on normal 10k services as the car is relatively old.
