Can someone please tell me if changing this sensor is a diy job or will it have to go to a garage. I've got the car on axle stands at the moment but can't locate the sensor. Some say by the starter, some say left, some say right and a garage in Rochester told me the gearbox has to come out and a specialist reset it. The sensor is about £70 and has one screw/bolt holding it.

Which engine do you have? On all the petrol ones I can think of the sensor is around the back of the engine pointing at the crankshaft oil seal and in most cases it is necessary to remove the inlet manifold to get at it.

Assuming it is an AUD engine then yes the recommend method is to remove the inlet manifold.

Sorry to keep on about it but one garage has told me the engine speed sensor is the cam sensor £130 all in and another is saying its behind the starter motor £165 all in but no guarantee that will fix 16706 as it could be fuel pump relay or a list of other things. Can someone who has had/fixed this fault please give me a clue, I've also been told the starter can be slid sideways to get at the one at the bottom if its an engine speed sensor.

All devices are identified by an SDC code and in the case of these two sensors the crank speed sensor is G28 and the camshaft position sensor is G40.

    16706 (P0322) - Engine Speed Sensor (G28): No Signal

sorry, I didn't say the code[16706] was found using a cheap code reader.I looked in the book with the reader and it says ignition/distributor engine speed input circuit-no signal, does that mean it could be either of the sensors [crank or cam] or is it still the crank sensor? Some garages tell me the engine speed sensor is the crank and others tell me it the cam. I haven't got a g code so could it be either one of them, thanks.

If you got code 16706 then it is the crank speed sensor G28 as in the fault code explanation 16706 (P0322) - Engine Speed Sensor (G28): No Signal

Thanks alot Crasher, I had been told on the forum it was crank but when I asked a so called vw expert at a garage in Dartford he said it was the cam sensor that is called engine speed sensor and gives that code.

The camshaft sensor is only used as an engine speed signal on non sequential injection/conventional distributor engines where the G40 sensor replaces what would have been points when I were a lad. G28 is always the crank speed sensor and in this installation the G40 sensor becomes purely a number 1 piston position sensor to enable sequential injection and coil pack ignition.
