Just had my sharan serviced. Used VWTechnics near Cambridge - I can recommend them. I mentioned that the engine was idling unevenly and that pulling away in 1st/2nd gear at low revs sometimes was a bit "jerky". Since they come and pick up the car and deliver it back they had the perfect chance to experience the symptoms.

Anyway it appears that there is a problem with the dual mass flywheel being seized and it will need replacing. I had a bit of a shock when it came in at £600 + labour. I asked if it had to be done now and I was told that is wouldn't actually harm the engine to drive it like this for a bit longer (the symptoms are not too severe and reduce when the engine is warmed up). Is that really the case?

I was wondering if others have seen this problem and if there are cheaper options - are non genuine VW parts OK? Do you think I can source the part myself and ask the garage to fit it?

    thanks

The model in question is a 2001 Sharan 1.9TDi (7M9). Engine type is AUY.

Actually I'm a little confused about exactly what is included in the quote. The garage guy implied that the flywheel, clutch and pressure plate are replaced as a unit because it makes sense to do them all while you have the engine apart. The £230 quote above is for the flywheel - but I guess that does not include the clutch and pressure plate, right?

The dual mass fly wheel was replaced free of charge on my Alhambra through a safety recall about 2 years ago. I got a letter from Seat which said something about a fire hazard. Hope this is of use.

Was all 2.0 VAG flywheels, + maybe a few others. Was because they caught fire occasionally!! The back of the flywheel was magnesium with a clip behind it that if it came loose, could spark and ignite it!!!
