So you're in a hurry & steaming along in the outside lane, obviously at 70mph. Some other motorist is sitting in the outside lane & despite the fact they must be able to see that you're approaching faster than them in their mirrors, they stick in the lane.

How do you deal with it? I've seen people tailgating, others indicate right & some flash their headlights, others just undertake.

So how long do you wait, what distance do you keep & how do you hint to them that you want them to move over?

I flash from a distance (once) and it normally works. If not full beams go on, horn goes on and they are fully aware of my presence quite quickly. Same with caravans, Sunday drivers and those out doing the Pembrokeshire 40 "taking in the view".

I then let them know what I think of their inability to keep left (or to the speed limit).

When I, or Jeremy clarkson are PM, these people will be publicly shot on TV .

Dont forget that when you are often steaming along at '70' sometimes its so steamy that you will be on them within a few seconds and thats when the accidents come.

I always keep an eye out because everyone in a big car assumes its P reg slow and old. I have no time for it these days and will move over, not worth risking dying to save 30 seconds at the end of a long journey...

Some people are so impatient that you can put your indicator on to move over and they will undertake you anyway because you know, they are more important than you and nearly cause an accident.

Something to think about the next time you are steaming. Its just not worth risking dying. Keep it to the right place i.e not on the roads.

But anyway, everyone should keep left. These people who hog the outside lane are the same if not similar to the people who hug the middle lane constantly regardless of speed.

I hate to sound like a preacher, but ive seen so many accidents happen infront of me on the motorway because of the selfish attitudes and speeding along with selfish attitudes and driving too slowly in the wrong lane.

Its also worth remembering, in the eyes of the law they arent doing anything wrong at 70 provided there is no room to merge into middle and first lanes. You are in the wrong for steaming in the first place. So my advice, take that anger, swallow it - and learn to relax when you drive.

Would you be happy if someone did that to your son or daughter when they are driving?

I said "steaming" but I don't mean driving like a lunatic really, maybe I should have rephrased. I normally keep amsafe distance & patiently wait for them to move over, but if they pass up two good opportunities to move back to lane 2, then I'll move closer & flash to ask them to move. I just wish people would observe the rules of the road.

    I understand your frustration Brycie.
We dont know how to use our 3 lane motorways in the UK.
When i lived an worked in Germany, the good old Germans use the Autobahns only 2 lanes much better.
The general speeds were much higher, crusing speeds @ 90mph.
You drove in the 1st lane, overtake an pull back into the 1st lane straight away.
If you wanted to go faster, sit in the 2nd lane with you lights on an cars would move out of your way.
If you were really going for it,lights on an indicator on constant an fly in the 2nd lane.
I was flashed out of the way when i was doing 135mph by a E56 Brabus Merc. He left me standing as if i was doing 70mph.
In 3 years out in Germany, i only saw 2 crashes on the Autobahns. Im not saying thats the total crashes in Germany, but you can see more on the M6 in a day.
As part of the German driving tests, they have to do 8 hours(i think) driving at speed learning the speed an driving skills as standard part of the learning to drive package.
I think in there test they are taken on the Autobahns.
Much better place to live an drive than stuffy old England.

Maybe having three lanes gives drivers too much choice then, we may be better off with just the two. You see people sitting in lane three on a four lane motorway, so more lanes doesn't seem to be the answer.

Impersonating a police car? That could be time consuming if you were caught.
