Hi i have just got a golf mk4 1.6 8v sr as my first car.

It has some problems like it having 4 different keys for all the locks, no lock is the same key. i don't have the fob only blank keys. i have seen lock sets on ebay.

so my question is could i go to the scrap yard and get all the lock + upper steering column with lock and electrics + ecu + comfort control module + clocks, could i just fit it and be done or dose every thing needed coding to the car????

Is there away to change all the locks with out recording? just fit and go as i like to say

here is a link to show you what i mean, with what i hopefully can change

Assuming the ignition key is the correct one for the car then just replce whatever locks you need with new ones from a dealer. Changing the ecu isn't straightforward and is unnecessary. Another option is to buy an after-market remote central locking kit. I have fitted several of these,

I would just swap the locks themselves, you can get new transponders and match them to your exisiting dash and ECU.
    Not too complicated really.

thanks for the reply's. i don't want to go down the after-market route. i would much prefer the vw original central locking system.

so if i just got the 2 door locks, boot lock, and ignition lock with keys and fit them could a mobile mechanic re-code them or do i have to go back to a vw dealer?
or can the vag com system re-code the key?

oh i forgot to add the Central locking dose not work with any key but it will work from inside the car with the button on the drivers door. The immobilizer light on the door wont come on ether

    many thanks

By locks do you mean the actual door securing mechanism or the part you put the key into? The parts you put the key into is relatively cheap from a main dealer, all the MK4 stuff on ebay or breakers yards is years old and pretty much worth nothing. If your central locking isn't working get a diagnostic scan. The last door lock I bought using the VIN was about €40.00 around £30.00. Key coding costs vary but allow 50-100 each depending on who does them
