Ive just bought a B6 A4 avant 53 1.9 tdi Sport with 70k miles. When going over poor road surfaces the front door seals are noisy. Does anyone have any experience of this and how to cure/reduce this? It seems that the noise is caused by the window glass rubbing against the rubber seals or the seals rubbing on the bodywork. Like what you hear on most cars when going over very uneven ground and the bodywork flexes but worse. Ian.

Yes, I have had this. I cured mine two ways:

    1. To prove you need to do this, drop the window a little bit, does the noise go? If so do the following - A careful pull on the upper part of the door. Open door and drop window. Very carefully and padded (don't want dints) put a knee near the handle and pull carefull on the frame. Do this a few times.

    2. Use some good quality rubber care or get some silicon spray from Halfords and apply to door seal. Mine trouble spot was an the top of the door and was the thin inner strip. I loaded this with rubber care and silicon.

All quiet and has been for 3 years since!!!!

I'm glad other people dont think that I am fussy about this. The problem is worse when the weather is cold and wet Ive noticed and I was thinking along the lines of some sort of lubrication on the seals to cure the problem. It makes you wonder how Audi didn't notice they had designed a noisy door seal system and sort it in the development stage? Im also thinking that the sport suspention doesn't help by being stiffer.

Thanks for your reply Marco, I will try your suggested solution and let you know how I get on.

    Hello,

I have this problem for years. It is killing me softly. It is so bad that I am thinking of replacing the car(i am passing each day on bumpy and uneven roads and hearing this sound from almost all doors) !!! I was trying to resolve it on many ways but after some time it is returning back! I did not try to pull upper part of the door outside(I am afraid to do it) but I was applying so many kind of grease/silicon sprays on door's and body rubber even on upper edge of the window glass, it helps but not more than few days, max 10-15 days! Please help, if anybody resolve it on longer time, I want my car to be quite. This problem is driving me crazy!

    Thanks

    Novak

Greetings Ian and others who may read this.
We have a 2002 A4 2.4 V6 sedan and have cured the noises you refer to. On our vehicle there is a plastic moulding, (A) secured to embellish the gutter, against which a hard rubber moulding, (B) attached to the top and sides of the upper door, rests. (This is not the soft rubber door seal further down but one presumably designed for aerodynamic purposes) Over time the upper edge of this moulding (B) hardens and or the felt like covering wears off causing it to creak against the plastic gutter moulding (A). As an experiment I suggest you press against the upper part of the window, from the outside, to produce the subject noise.
To rectify: Take a small square of medium coarse wet or dry or carborundum paper (used dry) and rub it vigorously against the inner surface of the sharp edge of the moulding (B). Do this to the top and vertical sections of the moulding until the repeated experiment does not produce the noise. Do this to all doors.
    Good luck.

    Hi David,

Thanks for your experience, but I will be very grateful if you can make few pictures showing where exactly to rub it.

    Cheers

    Hi,
It's just too complicated to upload a photo so I will try and explain. Firstly, I am not that familiar with all the models so my door seals may be different to yours. When I open each door, attached to the window frame is a rubber seal (A) which, when the door is closed, comes into contact with the plastic "gutter" moulding (B). The top edge of the profile (A) has a sharp edge and it is this edge that hardens and makes the noise as it rubs against the plastic gutter moulding (B). I remove a minute portion of the hardened edge of (A) as previously described. If not successful on first attempt, repeat until all the hardened material has been removed.
Good luck. Email me at davidarnold.coffs@gmail.com and I can send some photos in need.
