Help! Car Wont Start! No Power!

Hello guys I'm in desperate need of help. Last night I noticed my headlights flash randomly when it was parked up. Early hours of this morning the alarm went off. I disarmed it with the fob and went back to sleep. I've come to go out this morning and these lights are on the dash, but other than that doesn't seem to be any power to the car at all. It also wont let me take my key back out. Please help!

An uncurled paperclip will allow you to remove the key, the hole to put it in is at about 9 o'clock on the ignition surround.

You've not stated:

a) What type of driving you've done recently, so if you've only done short journeys it may be flat
b) How old your battery is?
c) When if ever you've charged your battery?
d) If you have VCDS and are able to scan the car (which will of course need power)
e) The last time you checked your battery connections?

Most just call a breakdown service when their car won't start, at least it's safe and you've not broken down away from home

From his picture he has power so the battery is working to some extent.

He does not say if the car tries to turn over or just dies when attempting a start.

Sorry guys, it turned out to be a flat battery. I've only had the car a few weeks. Battery was completely flat, it didn't even try to turn over, interior lights wouldnt come on etc. But the car gets used every day and I've had no issues with this until now. I noticed the headlights flashed on it last night just on there own, and then at 5.30 this morning the alarm was going off. When I came out to it to go out this morning it was unlocked, but completely dead. Luckily I have a multi-meter so I can keep any eye on it and see if it drains the battery again tonight. In fact, I'm going to plug vcds into it now just to see if any codes have popped up

Get it on a charger overnight using the underbonnet charging points

Also check that the battery is the correct one for your car, it should be one of these:

Varta Silver Car Battery / Varta Batteries / Batteries by Application

Or the Bosch equivalent (which is usually £30 more)

Many used car places that sell cars on may replace a battery with the smallest/cheapest one they can find...which may not meet the needs of all of your electronic wiz bangs.

Have you never had a battery go flat on you before?

It is indeed a big massive varta just like that. And yes I have had battery go flat on a car before, but I think its just weird that 1 day its at 100% and the next it is dead. I've just done a 40 mile drive... to charge the battery and also to do dpf regeneration. Battery was at about 30% after I jumped it, come back from drive and now at 100%. What is very weird is (and i know some of you may think this is crazy talk), when I just got out of the car, it locked itself automatically as soon as I closed the door. I tried to open with the fob and it wouldn't open, I tried again, it opened, I closed the door it locked on its own straight away. Tried to open again, wouldn't open for a few seconds and so on! Okay so here is where you may think I'm nuts. My previous car is a 57reg Volvo S40, that's sat on the drive next to the Audi, the other day I remember the alarm went off for some reason, anyway I ignored it and it eventually stopped. When I got out the audi after the drive just now I noticed the volvo alarm led on the dash was flashing very quickly, probably to tell me it had been triggered. I went and got the key, unlocked car, started it up shut it off and locked it again. Alarm LED is now flashing just every now and then as it should. But the Audi will lock/unlock no problem now. So I feel stupid asking this, is there any kind of possible way that the volvo has had some sort of affect on the audi...not so much with the battery drain... but with the fob's frequency (causing delayed unlock and automatic locking) ??? I know it sounds crazy but I have no other logical explanation.

I know my A6 is not well liked by my profile picture car and visa versa

Only way to tell is to park them apart (volvo down the street) and see if it still locks itself in the same manner.

When I run diagnostics on my A6 I usually have my charger connected to the points, mainly because I have DRL's activated and they can flatten a fully charged battery within 90 minutes, so on a weak one am guessing only a few.

If your DRL's are on and your lights are in 'auto' then switch them all off when running VCDS.

PS: I had a faulty alternator on my car which wasn't charging the battery properly...you'll only know that if your voltmeter shows below 14.4v going to the battery under load. If that happens could be a faulty regulator on the alt. But first things first get your battery charged up fully with a charger.
PPS: The in-car battery meter is not reliable, mine showed 100% but it took my CTEK charger 3 days to fully condition the battery and state it was full
