Hi all, first post so be gentle. After many years of BMW ownership I have seen the light and converted. I will be collecting my 2014 A6 S-line ultra tomorrow from main dealer. Have to admit I didn't know about the Adblue system. Should the dealer ensure the Adblue system is topped up before collection? Car is 9 months old and has done just under 9000 miles. Any advice much appreciated.

Tough room huh. Anyhoo, my answer would be yes, definitely. Ask them to either confirm to your satisfaction that its full or armwrestle a commitment to provide the first top up for free. Enjoy your new car.

I have an A7 3 litre ultra and just topped,it up at 7000 miles. I put about 12 litres. First fill since new. Easy to do yourself and cheaper at about £1.20 a litre in bulk 20 ltr.

Many of the refills you buy will come with one. A small or flexi funnel will also do the trick.

My car doesn't take AdBlue, but I was reading about it today in Fleet News which stated "AdBlue – a trademark owned by the German Association of the Automobile Industry (VDA) – which is a high-concentration urea solution (32.5%) in de-ionised water."

Until now I was unaware of the concentration, but 4 questions immediately spring to mind:

    1) Are other equivalent "brands" available?
    2) Can you get higher concentration urea solution which might last longer at a lower dosage and/or add less weight (the issue in the article).
    3) Fool the car by adding de-ionised water (I'm not recommending it).
    4) Add some "homebrew" - I haven't seen the physical product for comparison/matching.

    Maybe one for Bear Grylls...

As my adblue warning comes on yet again I'm wondering whether I can just fill up the adblue tank with water...

Absolutely, can't see it doing any harm whatsoever.

You'll likely find the NOx sensor will see the rise in NOx, as the urea concentration weakens and throw an emmissions or SCR fault code of some sort. Don't know if there would be any longer term effect on the cat but I suspect AdBlue is cheaper than a replacement cat!
