My March 2014 Diesel Passat Estate which has done just under 8k in the first year, flashed up "Oil Change" due a few days ago.
I booked it in to my local main dealer, and asked how much it would be for the oil and filter. I nearly fell off my perch when they replied £185.00.

Deciding to try a local garage I was quoted £100.00-but they wouldn't be using Castrol Edge oil. So in order to ensure that if anything major goes wrong within warranty, VW would not be able to claim that the car had not been serviced correctly, I went to the dealer and gritting my teeth paid my £185.00. Got the car back today and whilst collecting it I enquired how much the next service would be. £299.00 was what I was told. For this I would get the same oil and filter but a pollen filter change too. ( BTW Mobil oil was used not Castrol Edge !!)

Am I alone in finding these amounts eye watering?
When I part exceed the last Passat for this one, the fact that it had a full VW service history, seemed to add very little to the price I got.

Is it worth going to VW for servicing, or go to the local garage and save the money?

    Any ideas?

you can get far cheaper running costs if you buy something like a dacia sandero or hyundai i10. a premium car like a vw, with all that comes with it, costs more to maintain. its a simple fact of lfe. incidentally, and vat registered indi can service it by the book and as long as they use the correct parts and oil then vw cannot get out of any warranty claim. its all there if you google 'block exemption'. and yes, as an indi i do find their cost eye watering, but i don't hae to supply a massive all singing all dancing showroom with all the latest kit, a free coffee machine or some mouth watering totty to talk to.
edit, i do supply the totty, but she runs the workshop

There is no don't like button. So I have reported you not. Your post explicitly states "I do supply the totty".☺

I saw the most wonderful looking totty some years ago and introduced myself. We had a lot in common and had a great time together. Eventually we decided the one bed would hold both of us. Then sadly, she turned into Mrs Odd, all flash liquid and organic porridge

My cars always been serviced at VW but now its out of warranty I took it to an independent VW/Audi specialist who uses genuine VW parts, first thing he noticed according to the computer at its 17,000 mile service VW had put the wrong oil in the car, find a decent independent.
