I have a 1999 A4 Avant 110 TDI, last week the alternator belt snapped causing the aircon belt to come off as well. Replaced both belts today, took a little time but managed OK. Took car out for a test drive and noticed a few problems.

    1) More engine vibration and noise at tickover
    2) No power sometimes below 2,000 rpm - turbo not kicking in (this is intermittent but worse when the engine is cold).

I have already had the MAF scenario about 6 months ago, changed the unit and that has been OK since. Even disconnected the MAF to see if gone faulty again, but it hasn't.

Anyone have any ideas?, could something have been affected when the alternator belt snapped? or is it more likely to be an air leak, loose pipe e.t.c. since I pulled the lock carrier forward (with the specialist guides for the job) to get at the belts?

Also did a VAG COM check on the engine which came up with the fault code 17656 - Injector Start Regulation - Intermittent, could this be the cause?

Any help or advice would be most welcome!

hi mate, just had a quick look on autodata at code 17656. it says probable cause for fault code - injector start regulator/ fuel pump timing/ needle lift solenoid/ low fuel.
i personally would check my timing belt/ engine/fuel pump timing first. ive seen cars with aux belts come off and throw debris into timing belt cover and made the timing belt jump a tooth.
or make sure all the pulleys + loads eg alternator are not seizing causing more load and causing the belt to fail in the first place..

Sounds like it could be the timing then, I'll give it a go and let you know how I get on. Thanks for the advice!
