Evening all. I thought that I would check the oil level in my car on the way home from work and got a 'reduce oil level' message. As I've not put any oil In the car (I've had it from new) I'm guessing that the dealer overfilled when it had its first service? Has anyone had a similar thing? Cheers in advance guys, I will get on to the dealer in the morning.

It could have been overfilled on the last service, how long ago was that done. A small amount of overfill won't cause any problems but if it has been excessively overfilled then that can kill the DPF and cause other engine related problems as the crank will aerate the oil causing it to foam.

I'm not familiar with the HPFP arrangement on your car but on my old 5 series BMW a leaking HPFP would leak diesel into the oil and cause the oil level to rise.

Best have it checked as soon as possible.

Active regeneration can also lead to fuel in the oil.

I took it that the engine was switched off and the car was on the level.

Ah, well, I was stationary at traffic lights, engine running! Just popped out and did a reading with the engine off, says level ok. Thanks Whippy,

Howdy. I'm new to the Forum world....driven by frustration over the exact same issue. My first A6 2.0 tdi was replaced after just 9 months....6000 miles. The replacement has been in at the dealer 6 times (for over 20 days in total) over its short life of only 8 months for constant warnings to Reduce Oil Level. In addition the tailgate randomly opens and closes at high speed, the mmi sticks and freezes randomly and can take over 15 minutes to initialise on starting. In hindsight, the warnings were there when the engine management system failed after only 4 weeks. Am I just unlucky to have had two, brand new yet totally unreliable Audi's. Finally before I go and lie down.....is 31.4mpg from a 2.0tdi with 6k miles as poor as I think it is....(measured at the pump...not the obc). Help!

Sorry to hear of your woes.

I'm in a loaner A6 2.0 while my RS4 engine is being rebuilt. But I've also noticed that the obc calculations are wildly optimistic compared to miles driven/litres put in. I'm seeing around 38 (calculated). The obc tells me 44!

Thanks Duncan. Just heard from the dealer...new oil level sensor fitted, 3 control modules from another car (demonstrator in stock) to be donated to my car and the computer says everything is ok with the tailgate (despite video evidence to the contrary) therefore I have to 'cross my fingers and hope it is ok'! Apparently my problem with fuel consumption is that I am using Tesco diesel...I have been advised that I should use Vpower and that the extra cost will be covered by the greater fuel economy...anyone out there agree?

I gave up on the obc with the last A6 2.0 tdi which was telling me I was getting 37.5 mpg when the calculated reality was only 18 - 21 mpg at the pump. This was when the Audi / Dealer replaced the vehicle. Apparently, the combo of 2.0 tdi and the cvt gearbox was not a happy marriage, hence that combo is no longer available....the stories they tell to get you out the showroom!!
