a4 avant brake trouble

Hi,recently my rear drivers side wheel brake has been sticking on,when i stopped one night on way home from work,the wheel was smoking and sizzling and smelled of burnt brake pads,i thought the caliper had stuck on but the next morning it was fine,the following night it did it again,my mate says that because its been so cold that the handbrake mechanism could be sticking on and causing the trouble,anyone heard of this,thanks in advance.

You really need to drop the handbrake cable off to see if its that hanging the brake on,or the caliper faulty.The cable should pull-on and return without sticking when off the caliper.

you dont have to use you handbreak when its below 0° to avoid this problem

i had the same problem with my passat. I found that breaking hard a couple of times loosens the caliper. In the end, i ended up replacing both calipers at the rear. Maybe try jacking the car up at the rear, put the car into gear and let off the handbrake and see if you can turn the wheel.
