I've just changed the Oil level/temp sensor in the sump to try and get the gauge working again, it does not go up while driving along but if I turn the ignition back on after i've parked up it does this:

As you can see it reads a temp but as soon as the car is started it drops. does anyone have any idea's why it works then doesn't?
Audi A4 1.8t B5 - W Reg - Now with lambda fault (Bosch part on route from finland!)
    Completed:
Temp Sensor, Thermostat, Coolant change, Fixed indicator fault, new number plates, LED Number plate lighting, Oil temp sensor, Full filters change + oil + sparks, drain bung blockage removed
To do ASAP: Drivers side CV Boot, passenger speaker, EVAP Solenoid valve (Part on route)

Maybe a Cluster fault. Can you check the connections at sensor with ignition ON and then again once running? You may find an issue with feeds or earths?

Thanks for that Alan think you might be right with an earth, might try re grounding the oil temp sender and see what happens

Hi, if this helps: Oil temp BL/W @sensor to 4a/1 on cluster.
Oil pressure W/B @sensor to 26a/18 on cluster.
Earth looks to be thru body of sensor.

BL/W = blue wire, white tracer.
W/B = white wire, black tracer.
    Alan.

    Thanks for the info Alan

I thought the sensor was a integrated level/temp sensor with 3 pins not oil pressure thought that was driven off a sensor in the oil cooler?, I found this info on another Audi site while looking last night (won't put link as don't know if its against rules!)

    Pin1 - 12V Switching
    Pin2 - Ground
    Pin3 - Signal Continuity to ecu\cluster

But going back to that site to get the info I followed link in the thread and it seems lots of people having this problem even after replacing still it if they never bought a hella branded one they seem to be the only ones that work correctly ( and I don't have a hella branded one )!
