I think EGR deletion on these cars is done via the ECU

Doctle Odd, I was thinking about EGR deletion and put post on performance section, but got no response to questions. All posts seem old 2013 /14 and wonder if this would cause troubles with dpf etc

Ultimately deleting the EGR increases pollution so most people don't do it. The UK government has banned cars without a DPF from passing the MOT, I think the EGR won't be far behind. Use good quality fuel, service and filters every 10k and buy a 1.9 tdi!

Is that because the 1.9 TDI had no DPF.

I do miss my B5 passat 1.9 TDI, I have to say

Plenty of 1.9 TDi engines have the DPF, IMO the 1.6 TDi engine was a rushed job and it has too many problems for my liking.

I would be surprised if the 1.6TDI was a rushed job. VW seemed to be years behind other manufacturers when it came to adopting common rail engines, so, you would think that they looked at what their competitors were doing and tried to go one better...you would think anyway!

However, the cynic in me can't help thinking that positioning the EGR where it is was done with £'s in mind when it comes to customers having to replace them. Something that by it's very nature clogs itself up over time should be in a readily accessible place.

Has anyone got any experience of these EGR cleaner additives that can be added to fuel? Do they actually do anything? I'm thinking a periodic shot of something might prevent EGR failure, or at least delay it?

I might be wrong but I believe the issue is with failure of the cooler and not the exhaust side of the egr valve.... something to do with distortion causing the cooler flap to stick? .....if this is the case no amount of egr cleaning products will help.

Hi I've now joined the EGR Valve club! Your post was very helpful. Vw are wanting over £1000 for the work. You said cos of your research your bill was reduced. What did you say to Vw to reduce the bill?
Please let me know if possible.

    Many thanks. Luagain.

It manifested itself intermittently with the engine warning coming on, car going into limp mode and on stopping and switching off and restarting it would run ok again for a while. It had to be fixed as it was a potentially dangerous fault and after it was diagnosed I was quoted £1134 to fix it.

Luckily for me I had done my research and eventually this was reduced to the parts for free and 50% of the labour, which came to £324, which was still an expense I could have done without. The only advantage of having contributed to the cost is that I have a 2 year warranty on the repair.

But the question is that why is a fault, that is well known, that causes the car to go into limp mode, and is therefore potentially dangerous, not being treated as a safety recall?

    Hello,

I googled it and there was a very long thread on the Money Saving Expert forum about the same issue with a number of success stories. I pointed out to the dealer that this was a component that has been replaced with an updated part, that several owners had received good will gestures from either their dealers or VW UK, and I also pointed out my car had a full VW service history. The age of your car is important, as is a VW service history as I understand VW have not been forthcoming on vehicles that have been serviced outside their dealer network.

    What age is you Golf?
