OK, there is no dampness under the carpets, all leads have now been successfully removed checked and replaced, I think this is going to be an actual module issue, or they have actually been activated perhaps :S still digging haha

Now you have your VCDS what is the fault code/description? Did you clear the code and did it come straight back?

yes I had issues when I went from XP to windows7 as my original lead only came with vista and XP drivers. A bit of trawling the net found suitable drivers and hey presto, vcds is all OK again...If I ever change to a later Passat/A6 I will probably bite the bullet, stump up the £260 and get the pukka gen full version from Gendan/Ross-Tech

hehe this is just it, I would buy it, but if its a different program for the next car I look to buy then there is no point really. I'm waiting for the cable to come now that the software is working. NWD delivery so should be here tomorrow.
The fault code I got off the dealer was
    Airbag With side airbag and head-level airbag (1C0909605C --- 08 AIRBAG VW61 04 0003-------------- ----)

That's just a code for the airbag module itself. VCDS is hopefully more specific!

ahh ok, thats just the one the dealer gave me, hehe no wonder they were not being specific they were still trying to get me to agree to pay for whatever work needed doing without knowing what where how or why lol.
Well when the cable comes I'll hook it up and see what mine is saying, I'll also try clearing the codes and see if it comes back, might be that i inadvertently clicked the connectors back together without realising or some such nonsense

Starting to get a wee bit worried, been reading more and more about the diagnostic gear, basically if I'm understanding it right the ONLY way to be sure that what I buy will work properly, is to buy Ross Tech?
Been looking for a second hand cable but none for less than £155.
(the one off ebay hasn't arrived yet, surprise, surprise)
I can rent one for £30 but I bet that it's under the condition that I come to the garage use it there etc etc grrr
Don't know what to do now...

No the £8 ebay special will work fine, so I would wait for it. You didn't buy one from Hong Kong did you...I posted a link to a Uk based one earlier. It is considered a third party interface by Ross TEch and will only run the shareware/lite version of VCDS, which is limited to what you can do. It is fine for reading and clearing codes. I have one, I run the shareware version, it works great. Will not work on anything past 2005 as has a different interface. I repeat mine works on my 2005 1.9Tdi AWX Passat B5.5 (3B)
