HI all i know little about cars other than how much i love my A4.Ive owned it for over a year with zero problems but just been told by a local Audi mechanic that they can have problems with the CAM around 120,000 miles which is where my mileage is at currently. I'm now slightly worried and left wondering what to do. Is there anything i can do to stop any potential problem or at least minimise any damage if it breaks down? Or should i stop panicking?

    thanks in advance.

What year is yours?Mine is 04 and I believe it wont suffer from the wear earlier ones are liable to.I believe it is possible to inspect them and suggest you arrange this if you can see any cause for concern.

Your engine code will be AKE as it was the 2003 onwards cars with BAU, BDH, BDZ and BDG engines which received the more reliable roller finger tappets. Unfortunately it is not the CAM they have problems with, it is CAMS (plural), in fact four of them to be precise and with 24 lifters, 24 followers and 24 shims all being subject to a good hammering. From Audi these parts are simply stupid money with a set of cams, lifters, followers and shims costing £1800 and then £400 of timing belt and water pump so £2200 of the MAJOR before you even set spanner to nut!

    Worn AKE cam lobe

    Worn AKE cam folower

These were taken from my third year primary school teachers 2001 8D A4 Quattro (I am nearly 51 now!!!!) and were replaced with all genuine parts as that is what he wanted.

Thankfully Febi have come to the rescue with this kit which costs around £900 for the cams, lifters, followers and shims.

If you open up the oil filler cap, youll be abke to see the first cam and any damage. you car 02 should be ok. Also depends on how many oil services the cars had. regular oil services is the key to prolonging the life of the cams . most oeople opted for the longlife oil changes..

If have and driven few 2.5tdi. The noise alone on start-up can be a good indicator. But usually the cam that can be seen on opening the oil filler cap is your only proof..

You biggest worry at that mileage is the fuel oump..Im presently looking for an A6 2.5tdi quattro auto, (quattro auto) being non multitronic...Most of these cars have done more than 120kmiles and I'm not in the last worried...if its regular oil changes preferably every 10-12k miles..
