VW Polo bluemotion 1.2 please help!

Hi, I have my polo which I love but now and then after driving it, no matter how far, when I'm static either sat at traffic lights or parked, the revs are high and the fan is on. It does it in all weathers and there seems to be a hot or burning smell when it happens. It seems to be getting more frequent than it used to be. What could be the problem????

how high is the water temperature guage ? Should be 90

Could be faulty water thermostat or radiator sensor for the fan to work

Being a diesel bluemotion it has a diesel particle filter (DPF) and if you don't use your Polo for high speed, long distance runs it doesn't burn the soot in the DPF, your Polo is going into 'active' regeneration which revs the engine high to burn the soot, that's the burning smell. Run it weekly for at 30 minutes at least 50mph to clear the soot, more info below:
