Am looking to get a second hand A6 Avant from 2012 or 2013. As a former 535d owner I was originally interested in the BiTDI but having read about the S6 it seems like an interesting option. It's going to be more expensive to run but should be a chunk quicker and you get the V8 under the hood. The thing that has put me on to it is that it seems quite easy to tune with 80bhp being possible from just an electronic upgrade (from what I've read). As standard the BiTDI is probably better but the remap/tuning options are interesting.

Doesn't seem to be many about but the below looks like a decent car:
    Audi S6 AVANT 4.0 5dr S Tronic 4WD

Any comments or advice from owners of each would be greatly appreciated.

You can get a brand new facelift bitdi SE Avant for £38k (base spec no options through drivethedeal.com). I know I'd rather have that than the S6 with 40k on the clock... Having said that I understand the lure of the V8.

If you're buying used, there's also the option of the 3.0 TFSI. That's the 3L V6 Supercharged petrol, which is the same engine as in the B8 S4/S5. Part way through C7 A6 production Audi stopped selling the 3.0TFSI in the UK (still available in USA/Europe), so the S6 and RS6 are the only petrol A6 that you can now order. Used cars do pop up occasionally, but once you've filtered down to the ones with the important options (Xenons, Tech Pack, etc) then they're quite few and far between.
If you're interested in remapping etc, the 3.0 TFSI is 300BHP as standard in the C7 A6, and will go to over 400BHP with a remap. If you're then interested in tuning it further, you can change the pulley on the supercharger and get over 450BHP.

Personally, I much prefer petrol engines to diesels... and there's now word of some cities banning/taxing diesels because of all the nasty NOx and PM emissions. So I'd either be getting a used A6 3.0TFSI, or a new/used S6 or a new/used RS6.

'Mega Spec' No, pretty ordinary spec. Nearly all, if not all, the items listed are standard on an S6. Audi West London have on for £43k miles, same year but 4k miles not 40k miles.

You can get a base spec S6 via Drivethedeal for £46k. So a standard or near standard, S6 with 40k miles for £40k, the one from Audi with a slightly better spec for £43k but only 4k miles or a standard new S6 for £46k.

Whichever you choose I don't see it being the first one.
A6 Allroad BiTDI, Phantom Black, Rear Parking Camera, Tech Pack, Lighting Pack, Heated Front Seats, Side Assist, 75l Tank, Thru Load, Adaptive Lights, 4 Zone a/c, Comfort Seats, Folding/Dimming Door Mirrors, Deletion of Model / Engine Badges.

Just had a quick look through. Standard fit on an S6 (but optional on an A6) were Adaptive Air Suspension, Sports Differential, 4zone Climate, Xenons, Colour Driver's Information System (DIS), Electrically adjustable front seats with memory, Front heated seats, DAB.

The options on that one linked that were not standard fit for an S6 are MMI Navigation Plus including MMI Touch, Audi Music Interface, Power Boot.

    Thank for the info guys.

Really surprised at how well these things hold their value, especially the S6 where I assumed the **** would drop out of the price as soon as you took it off the forecourt.

Have driven the BiTDI but think I need to try the S6 to see what it's like. Will try to find some remap threads on here as well to read up on that.

Also just occurred to me that I think the quoted 444bhp should be 420bhp. The 444 figure applies to the recently facelifted S6.

I too am keeping an eye on those. There is a better spec'd one at west london audi for only slightly more. Prices seem a bit all over the place at the moment, feels a bit like they are dropping. 40K is a bit over my budget but very keen once they are within reach.

Do you think worth the extra in terms of purchase price and fuel consumption over a BiTDI? Esp. with the stories of BiTDI remaps to 360hp/750nm with (seemingly) little stress?

Yeah I do to have petrol, I don't do enough miles to absolutely warrant diesel. The noise and performance would make it in my opinion worthwhile. I think the BiTdi does a great job of adding some drama though sound. So much so, that I *considered* adding one to my 3.0Tdi through the Kufatec kit. But I can't really justify the cost just for the noise... I knew when I bought the Tdi that it would probably lack some of the excitement of petrol but I couldn't afford a newer shape S6. To be fair to the Tdi I have enjoyed it far more than I expected to. My only complaint would be occasionally weird changes from s-tronic and suspension / ride sometimes feeling harsh.
