    Hi
This morning I drove through some flood water and immediately after I had steam coming out the dash vents to the point where I had to stop and open the windows. The engine was running fine. I wiped the screen and then carried on to work with the windows down and the fan on low heat but high power assuming that some water had somehow got into the vent system. Half an hour later no more steam and the engine was still running fine. I started it up and took it for a spin about 3 hours later and car and engine and ventilation/air con all seemed to be working fine. Does anybody have any idea what would have caused the steam to come out of the dash vents, and is there anything to be worried about here? I assume not as the car seems to be running fine.
    Many thanks

water has gone into the air intake for the heater and your pollen filter is now soaked and should be replaced. although the engine seems fine you may still have done damage if any water went through the air filter, which should be checked and action taken if its wet. water should be taken in 1st gear as slowly as needed to create a bow wave in front of the vehicle, and preferably in a landrover, not a passat.

A sensible reply that is very correct.

Steam coming from the air vents was par for the course on the old air-cooled VWs, once the heat collectors that were wrapped round the exhaust pipes got a bit tatty.

Worth finding out first if contemplating doing some scuba diving in your car where the collector pipe for the engine's air intake (i.e. the one that feeds the air filter - apologies to the knowledgeable) starts. I recall for example that on one particular version of the Renault Espace the opening was facing down just in front of a front wheel. The one on my Laguna ain't too brilliant in that respect.

Anyone know where it is on the Passat, just in case?
