    Currently running a a4 170 quattro and wondered if anybody could provide some assistance/advice re. ownership of GTD's?

    A few cars ago I had a GT Sport 170, a mk5 - is the GTD much of an improvement on that?

    What real MPG can be achieved from a GTD and are there any potentially issues to be aware of?

    Thanks, any assistance/advice is appreciated.

    Yes they did a Golf Mk5 GT 170PS but that was a different engine code probably BMN, BLG was the petrol version. The GTD 170PS is CBBB, CFGB the later 184PS is CUNA. VAG Engine & Transmission Codes

    As for fuel con my Fuelly shows 36.2 but my Excel apps shows 43.46 since I've had mine but I mainly do local journeys.

    The thing I hate about the new GTD is the electric handbrake.

    Forgive the off topic nature of my post but the reason Fuelly is showing 36.2 and not 4x.x is because your signature is displaying it in US MPG and not UK MPG.

    I don't use it myself, but I suspect there's a setting you can change to display it 'correctly'.

    Compared to the MK5 TDI 170 you'll probably find it very similar. They are basically the same car underneath and obviously identical power levels. Main difference with the MK6 GTD will be that it uses the Common Rail (CR) version of the engine which is much quieter and smoother compared to the older Pump Duse (PD) versions as used in the MK5. The power delivery is less punchy so it may feel less urgent and a little more clinical, but the performance is still there. As far as the actual car goes the Mk6 interior is a big step ahead and a lot more modern.

    My only criticism is they are expensive buys second hand still. Good if you own one since they retain their value well, but a bit frustrating if you're looking to buy since they look poor value compared to other similar cars.

    I know what your saying mycarsavw.

    No I'm on UK not US. I had that problem when I first used Fuelly the mods said change it to UK so its been on UK ever since.

    Its a strange site, if I click on US it shows 36.2 avg MPG, 36.5 Last MPG, 40.0 Best MPG. UK shows 43.5 avg MPG, 43.8 Last MPG, 49.2 Best MPG

    You may have set the units on the Fuelly site to display in UK MPG but your signature is still showing US MPG.

    If you look at your signature code you have this;

    Code:
    http://badges.fuelly.com/images/sig-us/43490.png
    To display UK MPG you should be using this;

    Code:
    http://badges.fuelly.com/images/sig-uk/43490.png
    Note the /sig-us/ has been changed to /sig-uk/.

    Back on topic, I've owned a mk5 GT TDI 170 bhp and currently have a mk6 GTD, and pretty much agree with J400uk regarding the difference in power delivery and refinement of the mk5 PD TDI and mk6 CR powerplants.

    As as far as fuel consumption is concerned, the MFD is currently showing between 51 and 52 mpg overall, although this is a little optimistic, as calculating it manually when I refuel, I'm getting upper-40's, based on a mix of roughly 50/50 short journeys and longer trips of 25+ miles. This improves in the warmer weather by 2-3 mpg.

    I've not had any mechanical or reliability issues with mine in 3.5 years and 27k miles of ownership. Things to watch for;

    • If you do regular short journeys, it's worth trying to do at least one decent longer run once a week, to help keep the DPF clear.
    • both the standard 17" and optional 18" wheels are diamond cut, and if kerbed, will cost £80+ each for a refurb. They're also susceptible to whiteworm corrosion. I had 2 of mine replaced under warranty, as they succumbed to whiteworm around the centre caps. I currently have a set of 18" VW Rotary wheels on, which are not diamond cut, and I'm storing my diamond cut VW Charlestons, which I'll put back on the car when the time comes to sell my car.
    • the rear tyres can wear unevenly on the inner edges, creating a noise that sounds similar to worn wheel bearings. This isn't specific to the mk6; I had this on my mk5, but haven't had it on my GTD. Worth getting a 4-wheel laser alignment check to ensure the alignment isn't out.

    Still enjoy driving it after 3.5 years, and have no plans to sell it!

    Good point on the alloys SRGTD. I've got the 17in Seattles on mine and had a slight incident with a kerb the other day, so one of them now has a nasty scuff. Dreading the repair cost!

    Although I've not used them, I've heard good things about Lepsons for alloy wheel refurbishment. They're based in Gillingham, Kent and they charge £75+VAT per wheel to refurbish diamond cut alloys up to 18" if you send them the wheel with the tyre removed. It's an extra £10 if the tyre is still on the wheel. They're currently offering free courier / collection service too. Link to website below;
