    Hi guys,

First and foremost, a happy new year to everyone here.

    I'm new in this section as I'm presently driving a 2005 3.0TDI A6.

However I've got some road trips coming up with a pretty big family and might require a 7 seater car - needing a car that is big, comfortable, luxurious, reliable, handles well and have some 'go' in it. Hence I've so far narrowed down to the Q7 or the X5.

Hope to get fellow forum people's opinion on this:

    1. A 3.0 vs a 4.2?
I'm right now deliberating between the 3.0 or the 4.2 engine. I would love the 'go' factor in the 4.2, but trying to determine how much more does it cost to run it (fuel, servicing, insurance etc). From what I've read so far, it appears that the 4.2 is only slightly more thirsty?

    2. Things to watch out for
I'm planning to go to a dealer to buy the Q7. However I would like to know what to look out for so that I don't buy a gremlin. This is the car that I'm looking at so far.

    3. General feedback
What do you think of the car? Is it a massive pain to park? How does it feel to drive and own one? Is it reliable?

    Thanks so much in advance.

    Cheers.

Cannot comment on the 4.2 as have had no experience, I've got a 3.0 and its a brilliant car for a large family, yes they are heavy on tyres but don't let that put you off. I have managed to run mine on a budget by doing something's myself. In my experience the biggest thing to look out for are inlet manifold problems on the 3.0 around 70k. They are well built with loads of gadgets and handle really well, highly recommend!

    Thanks so much sir.

Just wondering, how can you tell if there is an inlet manifold problem?

I'm already mentally making up my mind that I'll probably do the 4.2

    Cheers.

Hello, unfortunately faults like that cannot be seen before buying, but it one of the problems the 3.0 has. Good luck you won't regret buying a q7

Hello, one thing that I would add is that it's worth going for one with a panoramic roof as my daughter absolutely loves it and it does bring so much light into the car. I also have the 21" alloys and would advise that you don't get. They do look good, but the clost of replacement is massive, you get a huge amount of road noise and don't go anywhere near a kurb because the alloy will get damaged as the tyre provides no protection.
    Hope this helps...

Hello, the panoramic roof is something I would like on my next one, I also have the 21" tyres and I am currently buying them online and saving, I have heard that even the 20" wheels are heavy on tyres, and yes you scuff the rims quite easily, the tyres I am currently trying have built in rim protection.

I will agree with the tyre costs on the 21's as i'm in the process of getting some new summer ones for mine as i am currently rolling on my 18" winters.

i have a 4.2tdi but it is the newer one with the extra bhp and the fantastic 8 speed gearbox.

I don't do a lot of mileage but do tow a caravan etc with mine and the fuel consumption can vary massively.

For example cruising on the motorway at 70 i can get into the 40's on the dis but trundling about as i normally do it normally drops into the 20's.

When i got mine it was already remapped tho so i'm unsure which way a standard car would go.

Like you i went from a 2007 A6 lemans 3.0tdi (via a nissan pisstaker i mean pathfinder briefly) to the Q7 and you wont regret it but i would budget easily a third more in running costs over the A6.

For me these are all about the toys and the original owner of mine ticked every box literally then added more after so i would look around and see what they have and what you would like.

    Hi

    I came from a 55 3.0 A6 quattro to an 08 3.0D S Line.

    1. - I loved the oomph the A6 had and whilst the 3.0 Q7 isnt as quick its a different driving experience and is quick enough. The 4.2 would be great and tbh thats whats probably next but no complaints so far here. getting about 30 to the gallon and do a fair few miles each week so the 4.2 would be a bit thirstier for me.... but you can't take it with you lol...

    2. watch for the usual rattle on start up that 3.0 diesel engine can have stuck timing chain tensioner and big pennies.
    2. inlet manifold runners fault ( Engine Management Light on ) again not cheap
    3. air suspension compressor can overheat

BUT cant say how common these are just these are the things I got told to look for when I got mine.

    3. Parking no worse that the A6 but the doors are bigger and you have to pick yout spots or you don't get out of the car.
    3. driving - best car I've ever driven and mega miles with no bother. will be going newer and possibly 4.2 next so that a good indication
    3. had mine 8 months and no bother yet

Hope this helps and if you need anything else then shout, but I dont have any regrets at all swapping from the A6 up....

    Hey guys... Thanks so much!!

So my latest updates here - I've put a deposit down for a Q7 today.

It's a 3.0TDI Limited Edition ( I wonder what's the difference with limited edition to be honest?!)

I saw the engine check light coming up when i started up but they assured me that got triggered when they washed the engine bay. Hence I had a big provision written that I will get deposit return if there are indeed issues with the car.

While the price is fantastically good, I worry that this car had 4 previous owners. But 2 of them changed car within a month of each other. So I'm not sure if I should be worried or not. What do you guys think?

As much as my heart says 4.2, my head and the domestic CEO says 3.0. As always, I obey.

    Cheers.

Do we have any links to the advert.

It may be a limited edition if it had the dark grey lower bumper trim side trim and wheel arch covers. it was a limited edition called the offroad package that became a normal option.

    This style perhaps?
