    Hi

I'm after a bit of advice, I've currently got a BMW 120i Sport 2006 which although a great car, after a change in job and commute, the 120i is not very smooth on bumpy A roads that I now commute on each day.

Therefore I'm hoping to change my 120i for a Golf Mk5 Match, what I'm after is a bit of advice on the best engine to go for.

I'm thinking of either the 1.9tdi, 1.6FSI or maybe the TSI 122, I travel about 10 miles twice a day on a roads at around 50mph, so I don't now need anything fast or really is fuel economy going to be an issue.

Should I go for the 1.6FSI, 1.9TDI or TSI? What experience have people had with these engines, which will be the most reliable and economical to maintain given my millage? Also what should I look for if I was looking at say a 60k miles 2007 or 2008 Golf Match?

    Any help would be appreciated?

    Thanks

I'd go for a pre DPF 1.9 TDI if I could find one.

    Hi

Are all mk5 TDI 1.9 that are not the Blue Motion model non DPF? If not how can you tell if say a 2007 or 2008 Golf if DPF or not?

    Thanks

Slight difference in emissions between Match 1.9 TDI and Match 1.9 TDI (DPF) according to the chart in the Parkers hotlink above.

Bluemotion will be £30/yr tax and the non-DPF will be £125/yr tax. I think the Bluemotion uses the better BLS engine compared to the BXE which has/had a habit of throwing rods.

See this "sticky" thread (worth reading all of it).

    DPF info - Page 2

Through choice I would not have a DPF - false economy.

What about the 1.6 FSI Match

Just reading the above it seems as if the DPF TDI models have problems as do the Non DPF 1.9TDI with con rods.

Therefore as I don't think with my low (ish) millege I'll save on fuel, what about the 1.6FSI Match, the question is, is the FSI engine a safer bet if I get say a 50k Miles 2008 FSI Match with FSH?

Also do the FSI have different engine codes depending on the age of the car or are all FSI the same engine code and therefore one FSI will have the same likelihood of getting faults as another (unlike the TDI BLE vs BXE engines)?

    Thanks

I've had zero problems with my BLS engined A3 apart from 1 DPF sensor but then again the car is driving 600 miles a week all motorway so it never gets clogged. All down to your driving style.

The 1.6 FSIs are quite slow and dull, consider test driving one for an extended time.

With your usage if did go for a diesel I would definitely avoid one with a DPF, you'd be asking for trouble.

The 1.6 FSI petrol should be fine for you. See

Just make sure you use quality petrol in it such as Shell V-Power Nitro+ or BP Ultimate. The 1.6 FSI doesn't like regular unleaded, they prefer low-sulphur 99 ron unleaded. Try to make sure the previous owner has done the same. I wouldn't buy one that I knew had been run on supermarket petrol. See
