VCDS shows temps as low and the guage is all over the place, so am changing the stat as have alternator off, but if that ain't it then I will change the sensor. But my local DEALER wants £40 for one (ouch). There seem to be plenty on ebay for around £10-12 that claim to be OE quality. Can anyone tell me what make(s) or suppliers I should be looking at. I know it's an easy job, but don't want to waste my time with a rubbish product, but at same time begrudge giving VW £40 if I don't need to...it's a 1.9 TDi AWX which I think has the green sensor

Your description of the seller is unfair he's making maybe 15% profit, hardly stealing. You could try TPS but only genuine CTS will do

unfortunately there is no TPS within 12 miles of me, which kinda defeats the object. I can get a Beru or Febi for between £15-20. They claim to be OEM quality. Any truth in this? This may all be academic if the Stat turns out to be the issue. The sensor was changed just before I bought the car, but the temp still only ever peaked out at 85...mind you looking at the service history it was changed in some random independant, so no guarantee they would have used VW OEM. Car has run fine ever since I had it and I have now done extra 70K miles in 4 years, but it only ever averages about 43mpg. Now at 130K miles suddenly everything has started failing at same time. Not surprising really as I've been lucky enough to do all of that mileage on only iol and filter changes. I've spent a grand in the last 3 months and that's with me doing most of the work!!

I tried a Febi replacement off EBay. It seemed to work fine at first but then the car started smoking on a cold start and the temperature on the climate display didn't look right. I changed it for a genuine one and it has been perfect since.
