i'd say it has been chipped. look for signs of thrashing. you should really inform your insurance company if it has been chipped.

Have a look at the Parkers website. You can find some useful technical information there.
To summarise what I found for the 1.8 engine:
    17/07/2001 - 08/07/2002 - 150bhp
    08/07/2002 - 01/05/2003 - 163bhp
    26/05/2003 - 01/12/2003 - 190bhp
The latest models 2005+ are 160bhp.

I also believe that the 190bhp engines came with a 6 speed box.

Another thing to check is the Service Book. In the front there should be a label and on there is the power output of the engine. My car has the 163bhp engine which produces 120kW outoput power. You will also find the engine code on the same label - but I don't know what each code means. The same label is usually in the tyre well in the boot.

    Hope this helps!

Audi did indeed make a 190bhp so its more than likely its not chipped! There are 2 stickers to check for the power output rating, one in the front cover of the service manual & one in the spare tyre well, they should be the same! The reading will be in kw & 190 bhp converts to approx 142kw (0.746 hp to kw conversion rate). Good luck with viewing, a bit of advice for you, check which dealer has stamped the service book & give them a call with the chassis and/or reg number, they should be able to tell you everything the car has ever had done to it, including repairs. This'll highlight any previous problems the seller isnt telling you about.

    BEX - 140 kW (182 bhp)

    For 1984cc:
    ALT - 96 kW (125 bhp)
    AWA - 110 kW (143 bhp)

    For Diesel:
    AVB - 74 kW (96 bhp)
BKE and BRB - 85 kW (111 bhp)
AVF and AWX - 96 kW (125 bhp)
