    Hi,

Just bought a V 2000 1.6 SE Golf. I was told it was the 8 valve but my insurance company searched using the reg no and says it is the 16 valve one with 105hp instead of 100hp. I am now confused? I have lifted the bonnet and it says 1.6 SR.

Does anyone more knowledgeable know how to tell the difference?

    Thanks

    What is the engine code?

In the manual or the spare wheel well is a sticker listing all the details.

On it is a three character code - that is the engine code.

Once you have the code, post it up and someone will know

EDIT: It'll be one of these - AEH , AKL, APF, ATN, AUR, AUS, AVU, AZD

I'm sure there's only a few that relate to your year but those are all the codes listed for a 1.6 Golf made between 1998 and 2003

    Thanks.

When i told the mechanic at the garage he said, 'that's the better one'. I was asking about cambelt replacement at the time so don't know if he was referring to this or just the engine in general. I would have thought that the 16valve one would be the one to have but i suppose not if more difficult to work on or unreliable? Any ideas anyone?
