    Hi All,

This is our first VW. I also own a hilux which I DIY as much as i can. It will also be the first time I have to deal with an ECU. After reading info for the last two weeks I understand I will probably need a few things to help me maintain and repair the car:
-Workshop manual: Haynes doesn't carry manuals for this model or engine so guess I will need to get the Elsawin?Good idea?Any others?
-A Vag-com? Is it relevant to this model? I want to be able to read faults and data as well as programming the ECU when ever needed. Is the socket OBD1?How is it done?

Im planing on keeping this car on the long run so I dont really mind making an initial investment for the proper tools needed to deal with it.

Any other ideas, suggestions and comments will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks and all the best,

    YTK

Vag-com or VCDS is well worth having if you plan to keep it running. Should be an obd-II socket. but the OBD-I variety share the same socket on these cars. You will be able to get adapters for the sockets if there is anything special happening anyway.

I wouldnt worry about VCDS unless you have a problem, you need a laptop to run it on also.

If you have the cash and everything ready then go for it. Its a must have tool for my DIY at least.

NEW HAYNES WORKSHOP MANUAL FOR SEAT IBIZA & CORDOBA 93-99 PETROL & DIESEL - 3571 | eBay

Halfords professional sockets and spanners are excellent for occasional DIY and servicing. Cordoba is basically a polo. A cheap fault code reader is all you need, the OBD socket is on the LHS when you open the glove box under the steering wheel. You can't legally own Elsawin unless youre a dealer

Thanks for that but when I wrote Haynes a couple of month back they replied there is no current manual for that specific engine model

You would find that engine in a Golf, Bora, Octavia, Caddy, Inca, Cordoba etc the other stuff like brakes, suspension etc is all pretty straightforward, timing belt needs some special tools (£20.00) or so and is a little more intricate that a IDI engine. It's very doable tho
