Golf 1.6 with the above lights now on and fuel consumption high. Is it likely to be the Lamda sensor and if so are they easy to fit?

There are a number of things that could cause the emissions message, but it's unlikely to be a lambda sensor.
If your fuel consumption has gone high, it could be a faulty coolant temp sensor. You'd really need to get it connected to a diagnostic scan tool to see what it is the engine computer is getting upset about. Until you can give us a trouble code we would just be guessing what the fault is.

There are a few members of the forum with diag equipment that would be willing to read the codes on your car (for some beer money).

    Regards.

Thanks. The light has gone out now of course! I have a spare temp sensor so will put that in if it comes back on, and take it to the local garage if that doesn't do the trick. All the people on the list live quite a long way away.

Just to let you know that for emissions related faults, you can get a code reader for less than £20 that will read the fault codes causing you emissions message. Spend a little more and you will be able to view data from the engine sensors too. These are generic tools that work with any modern car. Sometimes the freeze frame function of generic OBD is more useful for finding an engine fault than the dealer level diag tool. For all they cost these days, it might be worth keeping one in your tool kit.

Sorry, I don't know. My unit is Bosch, but costs a bit more than £20.
You could post the question here though : Vehicle Diagnostics Equipment- Except VCDS and I'm sure someone will be able to advise you.
