All of a sudden my alarm goes off randomly and when I use the remote at other times to unlock the car the alarm goes off. Does anyone have any ideas?

The car is a t-reg 1999 1.8turbo. As far as I am aware the alarm was supplied with the car, it is deactivated with my vw remote key fob.

    Hi,

I also have a 1999 Passat and the alarm goes off randomly when car is parked over night. This problem appears to have started after I valeted the interior recently, or maybe that is just a coincidence....

    Can anyone suggest anything?

I have the same problem on my 2001 1.8T sport.
I would suggest it could be any number of things but the most common tend to be:-
water building up in the battery compartment due to a blocked drain hole and either getting in siren and setting off alarm or water getting through the pollen filter seal and getting into the car damaging the ccm or the wiring to it.
There are other possible causes of course, if you search on here and tyresmoke forum you will find its a common fault on Passats.
In the short term the best solution is to remove fuse 14 (not sure if it's the same on pre 2001 passats (B5) this disabled remote alarm but unfortunately also windows and interior lights, however it will stop you having to get up in the middle of the night to turn off your alarm

Personally i believe that it's an inherant design fault with Passats and as such should be fixed FOC by VW, but i can't see that happening!

Hope this is of some help

Can I simply go to a garage and ask them to disconnect the factory alarm permanently? Everything works off the key, is this the cheapest option rather than take it to a main dealer for a diagnosis. The problem seems to be getting worse.

    I've considered that myself!
If you go to a main dealer i doubt very much that they would do that but if you can find an independant or car electrical specialist then it's possible.
One thing to consider tho is that, from what i've read in the past the source of the original problem is moisture in the ccm or wiring and the alarm is generally the first thing to start playing up.
After that i've heard of electric windows failing, interior lights etc.
At the moment i have taken out fuse 14 and just use the key to lock the car, this unfortunately leaves me with no electric windows which can be a pain.
I think that eventually i'm going to have to bite the bullet and take up the carpet and have a look for myself because i'm not going to pay some halfwit £60 an hour to mess about with the car but that is just my opinion...
Possibly the best course of action would be to speak to a good auto electrician and get some advice
