Not really... depends on what kind of data subscription he has, if he only has 3g and so does the car then using the cars 3g subscription via the in car wifi hotspot will make use of the better antenna in the car.
Agreed if he has a 4g subscription then "in areas that have 4g coverage" the onboard data service from the 6 + should be faster than using the 3g data from the car (although that will change with the facelift models) BUT a poor quality 4g signal off the phone may still be slower than using a better quality 3g via the car antenna.
