    Hi guys,

I have recently noticed that after a run in the passat, when I have switched of the engine and step out of the car I can hear a hissing sound coming from the engine which lasts roughly 5 seconds . Is this normal? Also of late I have noticed more black smoke than normal....but doesn't seem to affect the turbo performance? Any ideas or thoughts?

Most likely two different issues there..

About the hissing sound when you switch off - had you been running your aircon? My car acts like yours.

Lots of smoke has a number of causes - have you been doing a lot of stop start motoring of late? I find that my car does this if I don't give it a bit of a blast to 4k once in a while to clear everything out of its system.

The hissing as the Baron says is probably the AC winding down.

Good point.....I have never done this, and I remember someone else telling me to shift after 4k revs from time to time to clear the system.....cheers i'll try this out.

Sounds right....my air con is more or less on all the time. I'll switch it off and see if the hissing stops. Thanks guys.
