I managed to squeeze the camera in to snap a photo of the connector underneath without disconnecting it. It looks like I have 5 wires into the cable so presumably I have 5 pins on the other side. Hopefully this helps somebody else trying to decipher this part.

    Hiya motionpotion,
Your problem is exactly what happened to my car last week (a6 2.7tdi Quattro 2006).
After you have replaced throttle body it is worth checking turbo actuator (if it's possible to do so). That buzzing noise you've described in original post was due to motor moving back and forth uncontrollably. That places great wear on said part.
I let garage to sort mine out and once they replaced throttle body car livened up so much,no faults on diagnostic.
4 days later engine management light was back on dash again with turbo stopped working witching next 3miles.
Took it to garage again and they diagnosed faulty turbo actuator. After buying repair kit and fitting it -turbo still at standstill.
On Monday they expect visit from "turbo specialist" for second opinion, just in case if mechanics missed some little silly detail.
They told me not to panic about turbo just yet but I have already prepare myself for worst.
    Hope yours will survive.
By the way what is your mileage?

Mine has 140000 on the clock. I'm expecting another 140000 on it.

The new throttle valve was fitted yesterday. Is there some reprogramming that I should have done because VCDS says no faults at the moment after fitted.

Believe or not but mine went at 140k as well.
Don't really know about reprogramming as garage has done mine.
How much was throttle body to buy?

    No adaptation/programming required

It was £236 + 9.50 to ship it to Ireland. There's a few links above in the thread. Mine has 140000 miles on it. I work in miles even though Ireland has changed to metric. It was €450 euro from Audi for the same part.

I spent some time this weekend taking apart the throttle body part that was taken off my A6. Hopefully this might help somebody else.

Below are the results. It is not badly coked up with soot at all. But from the photos you can see that the plastic cog has worn out. My only conclusion is that this are designed to wear out and fail. The throttle body itself is heavy duty and then Audi/Siemens put in these little plastic pieces that only have a relatively short lifespan. Then they won't sell the worn part separately from the rest of the throttle body.

    ThrottleValve-1.jpg

Above the penny was stuck initially but sealing correctly with the inside of the pipe when I freed it up and flipped it around.

    ThrottleValve-2.jpg

The problems are caused by the wearing of the teeth on the black cog located behind the white cog that flips the penny when accelerating.

    ThrottleValve-3.jpg

Above picture after I have cleaned the soot and carbon off (and removed the white cog) you can see that the teeth on the right side of the black cog are almost completely worn off compared to the right side of the cog. This is just bad design. The cogs on the white plastic cog are also worn.
