Oil Filter Change Audi A3 8P 2.0 FSI 2003

I recently attempted to change the oil filter on my Audi A3 8P 2.0 FSI 2003 model and according to the Haynes Workshop manual and numerous forums that I have searched, it says that the filter is accessed from underneath (correct) and that a 36mm socket (not correct) will remove the oil filter housing and then I can replace the filter element and the seal. Unfortunately my oil filter housing is not a 36mm housing and seems to be a 14 sided housing which is much bigger than 36mm.
I have not come across any reference to this type of filter on the 2.0 FSI engine and was wondering if anyone could enlighten me as to what the best tool is to remove the housing.
I did not want to use an oil filter removal clamp type tool for fear of breaking the plastic housing.
Any help to point me in the right direction would be most appreciated.
